WELLINGTON.

Dear Bee. September 13. On Saturday last. His Excellency the Governor entertained no less than 136 veterans of the Army and Navy at a. luncheon at Government’House. Long tables were tastefully laid out in the ball-room, which was beautifully decorated for the occasion with large palms, etc., and sweet spring flowers. The Countess of Ranfurly was present, and, with her little daughters, saw that everything was done to make their numerous guests enjoy themselves, which they most certainly .did. Luncheon was at 2 p.m.. after which an excellent musical programme was given, the performers being Mr John Prouse. and Mr E. J. Hill, who gave great pleasure by their ringing, and Miss Stidolph, daughter of Mr A. C. F. Stidolph, a Wellington veteran, gave two recitations. Two toasts were given by His Excellency, those of “The Queen’ and. “Lord Roberts and our Forces in South Africa”; and patriotic songs and choruses were sung by the whole assemblage with great enthusiasm. The room was very nicely decorated, and arranged with numerous stalls, etc., and delicious tea and cakes were obtainable during the afternoon, under the direction of Lady Douglas. Lady Ranfurly was accompanied by Lady Eileen Knox and Hon. Hill Trevor. Amongst those presiding over the various stalls I noticed Mrs Frank Allen and the Misses Johnson, work stall; Mrs Warren, Mrs Knowles. Mrs Martin, and Mrs Dean, fancy and toy stall; Mrs and Miss Quick, and Mrs Tweed, sweet stall; the Misses Brandon, flower stall. In the evening the hall was crowded, and an aid using little farce, entitled “Who’s Who,” was capitally acted by Miss E. Barron, Miss Kennedy. Mr G. Kennedy. Mr Kirkby. and Mr McLeod. Musical items were given during the afternoon and evening by several young lad e>, among them being Miss Sprott. Miss J. Parker. Miss Powles, Miss Hewitt, and Miss Miles. Mrs Sprott. was was the energetic secretary. is to be congratulated upon the success of the bazaar.

’The Petone Bulb Show which was held yesterday in the Oddfellows* Hall, was generally pronounced to be one of the most successful shows that Petone has yet given. The Bishop of Wellington opened the proceed’ngs with a happy little speech. There was a wonderfully fine display of spring flowers, and all (he competitions were, well contested, and wore of much interest. Among those who were fortunate in obt(Lining prizes were Lady Hector. Mrs Russell. Mrs Perry. Dr. Perry. Mrs Jones. Mrs Riddiford, Mrs London, and the Misses Hector. Coleridge. Foster, and Riddiford.

Wives" and a little one-art eoniedietta, "Old Cronies,’ is to be played for the wo first nights, and for the last two he company will be seen in “School.” n spite of miserable weather on the ipening night, the house was well tilled with a most appreciative audience. The chief characters in "Modern Wives” are taken by Mr H. E. Nicholls, Mr Ales. Newton, Mr H. Plimmer, Mr Clifford Walker, Miss and Miss J. Newton, Miss Henry, and Miss Lethaui, while smaller parts are filled by Mr Bastin. and the .Misses Kane and Maginnity. Special ment'on must be made of Messrs Nicholls and Newton and Miss J. Newton, who all treated their different parts in a manner that cannot be too highly praised. Mr Clifford Walker and Mr Norris Fox made much of their respective parts in “Old Cronies,” and kept the audience in a continual simmer of laughter.

King Malinta, the Maori King, arrived in Wellington on Saturday evening from Onehunga in the Tutanekai, accompanied by more than fifty followers, including a brass band under Bandmaster Totara, which always accompanies his Majesty on bis travels. The discussion of native land affairs with the Premier and the Ministry is the raison d’etre of Mahuta's visit to the Empire City. On Saturday evening the Premier showed King Mahuta and some of his suite over the House of Parliament, and during his stay in Wellington he is to visit the principal sights of the city, in which he appears to take great interest.
