wear Bee, The PH ILHARMONIC SOCIETY held their first concert in the Theatre Royal last Tuesday evening, which was well tilled by an appreciative audience. Mr Fletcher (organist of St. Mary’s. New Plymouth) conducted, and too ihueli praise cannot lie given to him for thejwav'iii which he brought the members to a state'of proficiency, edhsl'deritfg ixireiy three months have elapsed since the society was formed. About a hundred members took part on Tuesday night, and as they were till grouped’ on. the stpge. the’ sight was very pleasing, the ladies, lying dressed in •vfii ;e< with red and blue badges to dis--1 iDguis.li the contraltos iiom sopranos. The singing of “Oh, Hush Tliee, My Babe.’’ was loudly applauded. The ‘•Bridal" clibrus was thought by many to be the Society’s best effort, and it was splendidly sung*. “The Silent Land" and “Song of the Vikings" were pleasant numbers. There was one item for male voices only. “The Soldiers’ Chorus," from "Faust,” am! the perfotmers had to submit to a well deserved eneore. Mrs Wrigley. of Ilawera, was successful in several songs. "All in the Hush of the Twilight" ( with violin obligato), was especially good, and for an encore “Spring is Coming” was rendered. The same lady also sang “Been use." and with her sweet voice it - was well rendered. “Always” was given for an eneore. “Miss Daisy Taylor sang “Why Those Sad Years,” and was much appreciated. .Miss .Tollie made her first appearance before a local public, and with the guitar accompaniment sang “The Spanish Cavalier,” which proved very acceptable, and for an eneore “.Juanita" was sung. “Come Beloved" and "For Thine Own Sike" were rendered by Mr Miller. Mrs Pope played some very brilliant selections on the piano, and in having Mrs J. Kempton as accompanist io' the Society, the members were very fortunate. as so few ladies understand the art of accompanying. The orchestral music, led by Mr Iliiigli, greatly added to the enjoyment of the evening. NANCY LEE.
