NELSON.

Dear Bee, August 20. HOCKEY has been played all the winter with great enthusiasm, and a match was arranged for Wednesday between the Wakatu (Ladies’) Club and a team selected from the two Girls’ College Clubs. There was great excitement over the forthcoming match, each club meaning to have a hard struggle for victory. But, alas! the weather was far from propitious; heavy rain fell during the morning, which made the ground very wet and muddy. However, the afternoon was fine, so it was decided to' play; but unfortunately the College boarders were unable to Ire present on account of the weather. so several members of the Wakatu Club played on the College side in order to make up the number. A good match was played, which resulted in a win for the College by one goal. Amongst those playing were Miss Filled! (captain Wakatu Club), Miss

Buchanan (captain College Club), Misses Preshaw (2). Leggatt (2), Roberts (2). M. Glasgow, Bunny, Gully. Robinson, Lindsay, Ledger, Trent (2).

There was a large audience, and each item was loudly applauded, many encores being accorded. The hall was prettily decorated, but the flags hung across from wall to wall rather deadened the sound. Songs were sung by the Misses Baigent. F. Webb-Bowen, Madge Mackay. A. Bell, the Rev. .1. P. Kempthorne, and Mr A. C. Maginnity; a vocal quartett by Misses A. Stevens and Kempthorne. Rev. J. P. Kempthorne, anti Mr Maginnity; Miss A. Stevens and Miss Kempthorne played a duet; Miss F. Coote gave a recitation; Mr W. Houlker a violin solo; and Miss Stevens and Mr Coney each played a pianoforte solo. Mr Naylor, the organist, played the accompaniments. Amongst the audience were Mrs Sealy. Mrs and Miss Leggatt, Mrs and Miss Greenfield, Mrs and Miss Wright. Mrs -Adams, Mrs Jackson, Mrs Robinson, Mrs Webb-Bowen, Mrs Dickey, Mrs Stevens. Miss Richmond. Mr and Mrs Patterson. Mr and Miss Houlker, Mrs Mackay, Miss Heaps, Mr and Mrs White. Miss Bell. Mr and Mrs and Miss Raine. Mrs and Mr A. Holloway. Mrs Mirams, Miss Quick, Mrs Walker, Mrs Bunny. Miss Bell, and many others. . :» . i.' The same evening Mrs Booth gave a CHILDREN’S DANCE at her resideice. the Union Bank of Australia, which was very much' en- ■ joyed by all the young people present. ' Schcvbl boys and girls have had a very . quiet time all the winter, and have

been obliged to devote themselves to their lessons. But if the proverbial little bird whspers truly, there is a gay time coming for them in the September holidays.
