HASTINGS.

Dear Bee, July 27. The Hawkes’ Bay Hunt Club gave a grand ball at the Princess Theatre on the 25th inst. The members of the Hunt Club have always been noted for the enjoyable balls given by them, but this was even more brilliant. The ballroom was beautifully decorated by Mr Garnett, and a quantity of Japanese lanterns added to the charming effect. The supper room was prettily arranged; there were a. number of small tables. The members of the committee were indefatigable in their attention to the guests. Dancing was kept •up with great spirit, the music being rendered by Miss Caulton's band. Many lovely costumes were worn. Mrs J. N. Williams was in black velvet; Mrs Hector Smith in black satin, the bodice edged with a chiffon frill; Mrs Carlile wore a costume of black and white; Miss Cotterill looked well in white satin; Miss Tanner also looked well in pink; Miss Kettle wore a handsome dress of white satin trimmed with blue and silver; a stylish black gown was worn by Mrs Coleman; Miss E. Williams had a pretty gown of white and gold; Miss Burke was in pink; a dainty dress was worn by Miss Hodge, of black satin, with a bodice trimmed with pretty embroidered net; Mna Lowry had a handsome black costume; Mrs Gordon wore white.

The Hawke's Bay hounds have had some pood runs this season, and one specially pood at Gwavas, where Mr and Mrs Carlyon entertained a large field. The field comprised, amongst others, Mesdames Rhodes and Harry Carlyon; the Misses Rhodes, Wardell, Irwin and Ingles; Messrs Kinross White, J. Ireland, Pharazyn, T. Butler, Godfrey, Groome, H. H. Bridge, T. H. Lowry, Dudley Hill, Ernest Groome, Harold Russell, F. Herrick, Baron Von Weddel, and Captain Hill. I am sorry to have an accident to report. Mr Pharazyn’s horse in taking a fence jumped short, throwing the rider, whose shoulder was dislocated by the fall.

DOROTHY.
