AUCKLAND.

Dear Dee, June 26. THE MEMBERS OF THE EDEN AND EPSOM LAWN TENNIS AND CROQUET CLUB GAVE A BALL Last Thursday evening in the Choral Hall, which was attended by a large and fashionable assemblage. It was, I believe, financially a great success. which, of course, was the main point. The invitational hour of beginning was much too fashionable a time for the ordinary run of Auckland people, especially as it was only a subscription dance. The decorations were not as extensive as usually displayed at dances of this kind. There wero two large streamers of flags depending from corner to corner, and during the evening this decoration was finished with rows of pretty girls, who wonderfully improved the cold appearance of the hall. The music and floor wero just perfection. The excellent supper provided by a. sub-committee consisting of Mesdames Coates. Peacocke, H. Walker. W. N. Heather, B. Noakes Udy and McFarlane, and the Misses Oberlin Brown, and Miss Gorrie, wa4 much appreciated, and these ladies must be congratulated on the success they achieved. They really all worked like Trojans, and the menu prepared for the guests showed that the Mount Eden ladies excelled in culinary art. The table was decorated uniquely with vases of pink camelias without their own stiff foliage, but loosely arranged with adiantium ferns. I understand there was some disappointment owing to there being no introducing. It is said there were plenty of gentlemen in the corridors and ante-rooms who wished to dance, and certainly a number of ladies.

THE PAKURANGA HOUNDS met last Saturday at Abbott’s, Otaliuhu, where a luncheon was partaken of by the members, kindly provided by the kind hospitality of Mr Abbott, and

from here we adjourned to Sylvia Park, when some of the best runs of the seusou were enjoyed. The country mustered iu force. The day was om of those perfect ones, clear and fine, with a cloudless sky. All the best people were there. Great was the array of equipages. Everyone’s spirits rose. Anticipations of successful sport were rife. The bounds, under the guidance of the huntsman, were thrown off in a paddock of young crops in Sylvia Park, and drawing through two or three neighbouring paddocks, when suddenly a few notes, differing iu tune from the somewhat discursive melody which we had occasionally heard at first, rang sharply out, a half score of tuneful throats took up the variations, and then the full, glorious, maddening chorus swelled and reverberated everywhere. The hounds now took a semicircle from one mountain to Mr Bailey’s mountain, and awny round Mr Ralph’s (our master) residence. There was consequently no opportunity for conversation, as we went our best pace across fields, taking fences, walls or hedges as Providence might send them. The hard riding division of men and women, of course, took a foremost place. The pace was good during this forty minutes’ run. and the leaps high. The frequent slight cheeks, which enabled the rear guard to come up before the scent was hit off again, made the field, if not so select, considerably more sociable and interesting. Puss now took a circle, taking us over part of our first course, and was eventually killed near the homestead of our master. By the kind invitation of our master, we went into the house, and were hospitably entertained by Mrs Ralph, who was ably assisted by Miss Muir. No sooner were we mounted ami the hounds thrown off again, when two or three more hares were on foot, so we hunting people were kept on the move till late in the afternoon, when, we had another kill, and we ad journed again to Mrs Ralph’s, and partook; again of her hospitality. Amongst those present were:—<

Rilling: Mr Ralph (our master). Miss Roberts. Misses Gorrie (2), Misses Morrin. Misses Stribley, Miss McLaughlin. Misses Buckland (3), Miss Olive Bucklaud. These functions •have now been of annual recurrence for 27 years, and the gathering last week was a further testimony to their popularity. Dancing was kept up till a little after 12 o’clock, the music being supplied by Mr Burke’s excellent orchestra, which rendered with taste a varied programme of well-known airs. Much credit is due to the Committee— Mr and Mrs Devore. Mr and Mrs Hanna, Mi- and Mrs Dufaur, Mr and Mrs Littler —and their energetic secretary, Mr Richter, for the success of the evening'. An excellent light ’supper was purveyed on the stage, and was greatly appreciated. Mrs Devore wore a rich black satin with long sleeves of light green, white and black plaid velvet; Mrs J. R.
