AUCKLAND.

Dear Bee, June 14. Major and Mrs George gave A MOST ENJOYABLE DANCE at their pretty residence, Wapiti, Epsom, last Tuesday evening. Two rooms were thrown into one for the use of those who enjoy the whirl of Terpsichore, while the staid ones played cards in the room set apart for that purpose, so that amusement was prepared for all by our thoughtful host and hostess. The music and floor were perfection, and having plenty of men, dancing was carried on with great zeal during the evening. which, being a cold, tine moonlight one, was just night when a dance is most enjoyed. The supper decorations were extremely pretty and unique, having vases of scarlet geraniums and scarlet japonicas and green leaves in specimen vases, surrounded with the daintiest supper imaginable, chicken mayonaise, lobster mayonaise, aspic jellies, oyster trifles, jellies, sweets, etc., while before the guests departed hot soup was dispensed, and was very much appreciated. In fact, our host and hostess did everything in their power to promote the enjoyment of their many guests. The debutante of the evening was Miss Northcroft. Mrs (Major) George, very handsome black broche, with cream Spanish lace fichu placed becomingly on shoulders, diamond ornaments; Miss Sutton looked well in serpent green silk with lace polonaise, the decolietage was trimmed with lace; Mrs J. The Auckland Racing Club’s Grand National Meeting was brought to a conclusion yesterday afternoon, when the weather, though threatening, held fine, and a large attendance favoured the gathering, His Excellency the Governor, accompanied by Commander Freeman. H.M.S. Mohawk, and the Hon. C. HillTrevor, A.D.C., being among the number present, the party remaining throughout the day. The principal event of the meeting was the Great Northern Steeplechase, which was won by Voltigeur 11. His Excellency at the conclusion of the races presented the Bracelet to Mrs F. Lambert, the nominator of the winner of the Ladies' Bracelet, which was a handicap steeplechase for qualified hunters of any recognised hunt club that have been fairly ridden at least six times during the present or past season. WEST END TENNIS DANCE. The West End Lawn Tennis ( lull's annual dance, held in the I’onsonby Hall on Friday evening last, passed off most successfully, and was a very enjoyable affair. The hall was decorated by an artistic display of bunting, lending an air of comfort lo the surroundings. The supper, served on the stage, was exceedingly dainty, leaving nothing to be desired to satisfy the most fastidious.
