The Heretaunga. High School for Boys held its annual sports on Tuesday and Wednesday. The interest of the occasion was marked by special enthusiasm on the part of the pupils, and by an exceptionally large attendance of parents, old pupils, and friends in the afternoon. After the contests were over, Mrs J. A. Fraser, the wife of the head-master, presented the prizes to the victorious competitors. The senior school challenge cup was won by W. McLean; junior cup, presented by Air S. IL Quartley, F. Mackenzie; Mr Canning's cup, G. Tuke; senior hurdles, gold medal presented by Air A. Merewether, L. Tuke; steeplechase cup, presented by Air F. C. Ferry, F. Kelly; old boys' race, O. Nelson; throwing the cricket ball, presented by Air T. W. Lewis, G. Tuke; mile race, cup presented by Mrs Tabuteau, G. Braithwaite; half mile, N. .McLean; consolation prize. F. Peach. Some of the visitors present were: — Mesdames Williams, Nelson. Smith, Quartley, Mackenzie, Russell, etc.

A committee of ladies, consisting of Mesdames Barker, St. Hill, Hunter, White. Sebley, Simeox, and G. White, inaugurated a highly successful concert and dance at Porangahau on the 20th inst. in aid of the Indian Famine Fund. The audience was an enthusiastic one, and the encores were loud and frequent. Miss Baskivillc was in excellent voice, and sang "The Holy City” with telling effect, and in ‘•There'll Come a Time" she was equally felicitous, and evoked pro-

longed applause. Miss Ellingbam sang two ballads charmingly. Mrs Eames played a pianoforte solo most spiritedly, and Mr C. 11. St. Hill has rarely been heard to greater advantage than in “Absent Yet Present" and "Cousins." Air C. Sutton with his dancing, accompanied by Mr Waimarama. gave great enjoyment Io the audience. Miss Ellingham’s charming voice was again heard in a. quintette with the Misses Sidwell and Lambert and Messrs Roach and Rudman. Mr Kettell, in “They All Love Jack," earned a well-deserved encore, as did also Air R. E. Rudman by liis rendering* of "The AbsentMinded Beggar." Mr Eames also recited ail original poem on the Indian famine. Air J. Ormond scored a great success in "Phil the Fluter's Ball," and was encored. Altogether an exceptionally good programme was afforded, and a substantial sum will lie added to the Indian Famine Flunk
