GOLF NOTES.

(By

Bogey.)

IMXI coiumeaccs with golfers a new page in the annuls of their game for the new rules adopted by the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews in September last are now law in thin distant part of the globe. Though the new rules were issued in September last, it was felt inadvisable, owing to the difficulty of procuring copies of the rules, that they should come into force here till 1900. Copies of the rules am now available, and a framed copy in large ty|>e has wisely been procured by the Auckland Golf Club and hung in the verandah of the Club-house. This large copy should be of great use to members for reference in connection with the numerous doubtful points which are bound to arize, and T would advise every club to furnish Itself with a similar copy. Ju case any of my readers feel inclined to present to their elub a similar copy, 1 may mention that the publishers are the Golf Agency Company, Ha noverstreet, Edinburgh. An almost inexplicable, and to me distasteful feature about the new rules, is that they are copyright. I’resumably. therefore, a club like our own cannot reprint the rules for sale among its members, and it is a question for our legal friends to decide whether a club may even print and make a free distribution of the rulers to its members. I have recently received a copy of the rules printed by a firm in Australia, but whether the publishers were in ignorance of the copyright or not, 1 cannot say. At any rate they have taken the bull by the horns.

Several of our members have been golfing on Southern links during the holidays, and even reached as far as Dunedin, where a party of Melbourne golfers is putting in a good time. An “At Home” was recently given by the Ladies’ Club as a farewell to Miss Amy Barstow, the hon. secretary, who is shortly to be married to Mr Campbell, of Wellington. The occasion was used by the members of the Club to present Miss Barstow with a token of their appreciation of her very valuable services to the Club since its foundation. Miss Barstow has been the first and only secretary, and to her efforts are largely due the present successful condition af the Ladies’ Club.

Among our other visitors during the holidays, Mr Aronson, the Hon. Treasurer of the Australian Golf Club, has enjoyed several good rounds. Mr Aronson has been one of Mr Burnside’s right hand men in the laying out of the Australian Golf Club's splendid links at Botany, a course which will take its place as one of the finest south of the Line. It is in every sense a championship course, and its greens in a good season will be very fine.

Conundrum—lnvented last Saturday: Why are there no Park's patent putters in the Transvaal at present? Because they are Roiueks.
