Dear Bee, December 29. A successful concert took place in the Theatre Royal, Tennyson street, on Wednesday the 27th inst.. for the benefit of the families of those on active service in South Africa. The programme was replete with choice selections from the most stirring patriotic songs, past and present, which the large audience thoroughly appreciated, amongst those present being Mesdames Sainsbury. Coleman, Tanner. Smith, Davidson. Williams, Hoadley, Wood, Goldsmith, Logan, Carlile, McLean, Canning, Dunean, Ronald, Locking, Berneau, Perry, Cane. Cornford, Hartley, Jones, Swan, the Misses Cornford, Lovell, Balfour, Wood, Dixon, Anderson, Cotterill, Hoadley, Williams. Kettle, Kennedy, Watt. MeLe&n, St. Hill. Locking, Hitching, Rees. Dinwiddie, Seale. Morecroft, Lyndon, Macfarlane and Messrs Wood, Sainsbury, Watt, Tanner, McLean, Kennedy. Cornford, Lognn, Williams, Perry, Barron, Swan, Cotterill, Kettle, etc. Amongst, the performers were Miss Tanner and the Misses Large sang delightfully, a trio by them, “Hark to the Rolling of the

Drum” (Bishop), being 1 especially pleasing. Miss Edwards played the opening piece admirably, and 'was enthußiastieally received, and later in ♦he evening Miss McLean also gave a pianoforte solo, “Polish Dance” (Seharwenka), which was played with infinite expression, and formed a very attractive feature of the concert. Mill. A. Cornford, and Mr J. G. Swan, ■who recited, the former “The Absentminded Beggar,” and the latter “The Midnight Charge” (Clement Scott), kept the audience well entertained. Miss Tanner sang “Bule Britannia” with her accustomed spirit. Mr A. L. T. Jones was well received, and Mr F. L. Jones was very successful in her solo, “The Dashing White Sergeant.” One of the best pieces of the evening was “The Maid of Athens,” by Miss McAlpine. Dr. Irving sang “The Girl I Left Behind Me,” a.nd also took part in a quartette, “Carnovali” (Rossini) in company with the Misses Tanner and Large and Mr Cane. Other successful items on the programme were “The Death of Nelson,” by Mr Slade, and
