NOTES BY MONITOR.

The Takapuna Jockey Club's programme for their Summer Meeting, which takes place on January 29th, 31st, and February 3rd. is now to hand. A very attractive'bill of fare has been arranged, and the total amount oi prize-money to be given away is £2150. The chief event to be decided on the first day is the Takapuna Cup of 300 sovs., 11 miles. The Steeplechase, which takes place on the second day, is worth 150SOVS.. while the big event to be decided on the concluding day is the Summer Handicap of 120sovs. It is not often that we see or read of three full-brothers going out to compete in a race, but this was the ease in the steeplechase run at the Takapuna meeting last Saturday. Nor’west. Troubadour and Dingo, all being sired by Sou’-wester from Betty. The first-named won the event, carrying the crusher of 12.12 in great style. Troubadour disgraced himself early in the race by baulking at the jump on top of the hill, while Dingo disgraced the family by turning turtle at the water jump. The well-known stallion Eiridspord died recently at the Duckenfield Park stud, Sydney. This valuable horse, who was bi - Isonoiny—Louise Queen, was imported in 1890 by Mr VV. It. Wilson, of St. Albans, and was the sire of several well-known performers. Mr It. C. Allen, who owned Eiridspord. has replaced him with the Wellington Dark-bred Cravat, by Castor—Necklace. Nor’-west was in great form at Takapuna last Saturday. He jumped the obstacles in faultless style throughout, never once leaving the race in doubt from the fall of the flag, carrying his heavy burden to victory in a very ■easy fashion. The Sou'-wester gelding will Im- hard to beat in the big Summer Steeplechase at Ellerslie next month. In America they establish some very fast times over all sorts of distances. The latest to hand is that of Buckwa, who is credited with having run 2| miles in 3min Slsec. It took Seahorse 3min 56 l-ssec to do the same distance, which was a great performance, although some way behind the America n’s.

The racehorse Bluejacket, who annexed the St. Andrew's Handicap at the Shore meeting, has since been sold to Mr A. F. Scott, of Napier, who is said to have given 400 guineas for St. Legvr’s son. It was only recently that the same sportsman purchased Bluejacket's mother, Antelope. It is reported that the chestnut colt Cranberry has become quite sound again. This will be welcome news to his English owner, who recently gave n long price for the son of Cranbrook and Tiwoona.

Panoply has been spld to a Mongonui sportsman and was shipped North last week. The old Splendor gelding is to be raced at outside meetings, and should be quite capable of paying his way in the country. During the week a fair amount of business has been transacted on the Auckland Cup. and on the doubles — Cup and Railway Handicap, Cup and Steeplechase. Explosion still holds his position as first favourite, and is quoted at the short price of 5 to 2, but backers are asking a shade longer odds about Messrs Nathan’s colt. Record Reign is also in request, and a fair amount has been written about his chance at 4 to 1. For the Railway Handicap Rex, Rosella anil Dayntree are in demand, while for the Steeplechase Nor'-west is a strong order since his win at the Takapuna meeting. The following are the Cup quotations:— 5 to 2 Explosion, 4 to 1 Record Reign, 6 to 1 Coronet, 7 to 1 Sant Ilario and Tire, 8 to 1 Bluejacket. 16 to 1 St. Paul, Battleaxe and Uhlan, 20 to 1 Swordfish and Auld Reekie. 33 to 1 Donneraile, Pokomoko and Knight of Athol, 40 to 1 Halbadier, and 50 to 1 Hastings and Admiral Hawke. The hurdler Volcano Showed splendid form at the Takapuna meeting, winning both hurdle races in a very hollow fashion. This 6-year-old brown gelding, who claims half-brothership to that good horse Dummy, is improving with age, and although not a particularly strong-built horse, he is possessed of a powerful roach back, which, although it does not improve his appearance, should assist him greatly to carry his burden safely over the obstacles. Volcano should be found capable of winning many an important jumping event for his painstaking trainer, F. Macmanemin. St. Ursula, who was thought by many to hold a mortgage over the two big handicaps at the Taka-puna meeting, did not run up to expectations. On the opening . day -she wns not even in a place, while in the Spring Handicap, on the second day, she got ■all the worst of a straggling start, and when Chaafe got her going she did not appear to be able to get a clear run through the field or I fancy the finish would have been a little more interesting. It is stated that owing to Tod Sloan’s successes on the English racecourses there is a regular craze for American jockeys, and indifferent riders from the States can rely on getting good mounts in England. Some Australian jockeys who have seen Sloan in the saddle do not think much of him as a rider, but for all that he keeps on winning races, and up to October 14th had won ninety-six out of 264 mounts. He is the only one of the leading jockeys who would have repaid following in England this season. A sovereign on each of his mounts would have returned a profit of £39.

Dentist is a strong fancy among many for the Summer Steeplechase, and he has been backed a good deal in doubles recently. Rae has the bay son of Cap-a-pie looking in great buckle at present.

Flying Fox's two-year-old sister Vane won a race in England last month, and is now spoken of as the probable winner of the Oaks. The pony Norah still continues to be unruly at the post. On Saturday prior to the start for the Pony Race she bounded into the air and unseating her rider got hung across the rails. She remained in that position struggling and kicking to free herself until pulled off bi’ the trainer. On examination it was found that she was cut slightly about both stifles, but she was sent to the post, and made amends for her pranks by getting well away with the field, and after running a good race was just beaten by Texas. The erst Aucklander Royal Rose, along with Loyalty, who won the C.J.C. Challenge Stakes and Auckland Derby, are to be shipped from Sydney to India. Tire was brought up from Napier last week and is now located at Ellerslie. where be :s receiving his preparation for the Auckland Cup. Several wagers have been written lately about his chance, and he now stands at 7 to 1 for the two mile race. The Napier-owned Tauhei, since her arrival in Auckland, seems to be much

below herself. The grey mare has been rested and only given easy pacing work lately. It is to be hoped she will 'be got into form in time to compete at the A.R.C. Summer Meeting. Orme heads the list of successful sires in England, his total up to Oct. 14 being £45,263, of which Flying Fox won £37,415. The jumpers Evening Wonder and St. Simon were shipped home to Gisborne last week. The former was thought by many to have a great chance of scoring in the Hurdle Race run on t-he opening day of the Takapuna meeting, but he could only get into third place. It is greatly to be hoped that Mr Skipwith ■will be able to get St. Simon fit and well for the winter jumping events. The big son of St. Leger looks a bit rough at present after his lengthj' spell in the Waikato district. ® © ® TAKA PUN A JOCKEY CLUB'S SUMMER MEETING. The spring meeting of the Ta-kapuna Jockey Club was brought to a close on Saturday last under very favourable "circumstances. As on the opening day. the weather was delightful, and a very large number . was present to witness the sport. Fully 4000 people were conveyed over by the Devonport Ferry Company to the picturesque suburban racecourse, while no less a sum than £7344 was putthrough the totalisator, making a total of £13,996 for the two days. The rangements for the whole meeting were admirably carried out by Mr Robt. Wynyard, the popular secretary, who had every thing in apple-pie order. The racing proved exceedingly interesting, Mr Knight’s adjustments being responsible for several well contested finishes. Proceedings were opened with the Stanley Handicap, for ■which a dozen horses lined up behind the barrier. Sultan was the popular selection, which as things turned out proved correct. After considerable delay at the post the field were let go. The big chestnut was first on his legs, closely followed by St. Innes. The former, after making all the running, scored very easy from the field. St. Innes, who made a bold bid to get up, finished in second place. The Hurdle Race followed, and was contested for by half-a-dozen runneri. The visiting horse, Pokomoko, was in strong request, and went to the post a pronounced favourite, nearly half the money invested in the machine being on the big bay gelding. After several false starts Mr Gray got his field well away, Atlanta being the. first to move. The daughter of Muskapeer was at the head of affairs for the first time-round, when Volcano went to the front, and holding his' own for the remainder of the journey"', won hard held from Favona, who came very fast in the straight, just beating the favourite for second place. As the horses returned to scale the public made a demonstration against Pokomoko. They were evidently" not satisfied with the way Lind had ridden the horse. A meeting of the stewards was afterwards held to inquire into the matter, and after hearing the evidence of the owner and rider it was decided to postpone the inquiry until further evidence could be procured from the South as to the alleged backing of the horse by the owner, who stated that he had done so in other quarters. In the Spring Handicap eight out of the dozen listed on the card to compete went to the post. St. Ursula was made favourite, while old St. Clements had quite a large army of backers. From a very moderate start Dayntree was the first to show out, closely followed by Roxana, Rex, and Porangi I’otae, with the rest of the field in a bunch. On passing tlie stand Dayntree was still in command, while Lillie commenced to move, and ran up to within half a length of Dayntree, Once in the straight the grey horse never left the -issue in doubt, and coming on full of running passed the judge's box fully three lengths ii. front of Lillie, while St. Ursula, who hud all the worst of the start, and did uo( seem to be able to

get through the field, finished in third place. The Second IlaDdieap Flack <•<» Followed. Miss Biair being the ptc at* pick. When the barrier flew up l’< Tseverence and the favourite were il>e first to appear. The former shcnt.il the way for nearly the whole distance, having fully a length's lead of the field. When once in the straight Chancellor 11. and Toroa were seen to be conning very fast, and the two putting in their claims opposite the stand fought out a ding-dong finish, Toroa securing the verdict by half a head. The Pony Handicap attracted six runners, of which Lena was made a red-hot favourite. The field was despatched by Mr Gray to a splendid start, all the horses moving away together. Nora soon went to the front, closely foil"-—"d by Mimoa, and the pair ’■need .gether into the straight, where it looked as though Nora would win. but here Texas shot out. and coming with a great dash jusft defeated Nelson's daughter by a neck. Then came the Cantley Handicap, a good field of nine runners being up behind the banner. From a good start St. Peter and Little Wonder were soon racing for the lead, followed by Cuirasette. When the straight was reached St. Peter had still a slight advantage, the others being all bunched close up. Here the North Shore mare shot to the front, and running very gamely, gained the verdict by half a length. 'The Handicap Steeplechase was contested for by' six runners. Nor’-west, although having a heavy burden to carry, was made a pronounced favourite. At. the fall of the flag Glenarm and Dingo were the first to get going and the pair raced up the hill closely followed by Crusado, Opua, an Troubadour. When the rails were reached on top of the hill the last named baulked and took no further part in the contest. After passing the stand the second time round Nor’-west was at the head of affairs, closely followed by Opua who was going very strong. This order was maintained for pretty well the rest of the journey, the pair having the race left to themselves. Nor’-west, who appeared to have the best of it, was first over the last obstacle, and coming- on in great style won easily ..by three lengths. The concluding item the Velter Handicap, nine horses u, mg to the post. When the barrier flew up Cavalier was quickest on his feet, and after making all his own running won by two lengths from St. Ona. The Doctor, who was well supported on the machine, made a late rnn. but could only get into third position.
