AUCKLAND.

Dear Bee. June 27. A most enjoyable afternoon tea was given by Mrs .1. M. Chambers on Monday last at her pretty residence in Parnell. It rained during the early part of the afternoon, but fortunately cleared up before the arrival of the guests, leaving the atmosphere surcharged with a misty shroud, a sort of afternoon when the cheery fires which were brightly burning in both large' reception rooms (these rooms were thrown into one by folding doors) were very much appreciated. Our hostess welcomed the guests warmly on arrival, and was ably assisted to entertain by Mrs John Chambers. The verandah, which was encanvassed made an excellent passage to the large dining-room. Hhere the musicians were stationed, and their music was quite a feature of the afternoon, with its dreamy concourse of sweet sounds, notably selections of the newest and most popular airs, which seemed so suitable for the misty weather. The afternoon's refreshments were in the able hands of the- Misses Churton, and their bevy of pretty attendant damoizelles, who wer neatly gowned in dark costumes and smart white aprons. The table was decorated with great taste, being slashed with canary ribbons, the candles and electric lights being shaded with a similar coloured crinkley paper. Acasia flowers intermingled with pretty autumn leaves and violets in shower bouquets were arranged in vases. Mrs J. M. Chamber's pretty little baby nephew, Master Welstead, was brought in during the afternoon, and of course was idolized by the guests. Mrs J. M. The day was beautifully fine, but rather cold for the scent to lie well, on account of the recent frost, it was one of those days when hunting demands inexhaustible patience on the part of all concerned. Pussie was drawn for. through the surrounding scoria paddocks, until we reached Penrose, but no find, then our Master. Mr Gorrie. gave the m-ot d’ ordre to try the cultivated land in Mr Wood’s property. Ellerslie, but still not successful. We adjourned to the gorse in one of Mr Wood's paddocks. which has seldom b?en drawn blank, and it did not belie its reputation upon this occasion, for soon there was a puss on foot, who ran in a ring first making towards Onehunga and then away towards One Tree Hill, and back again to where it was started, but the going was very slow, as the hounds had to pick their scent very carefully, and were often pressed by rhe huge cavalcade of followers.
