OUR ILLUSTRATIONS.

AUCKLAND POULTRY ASSOCIATION. Elsewhere in this issue we give some interesting- pictures of the birds exhibited at the Auckland Poultry Association's Show, held on Thursday, Friday and Saturday of last week. The Show was a very successful one, some 780 birds being entered for competition. ® ® ® THE SETTLEMENT IN SAMOA. The excitement with regard to Samoa has entirely subsided for the present, at all events. The natives have given up their arms and returned to their homes. The Commissioners have upheld the decision of the Chief Justice declaring Malietoa Tanu King. That monarch has resigned his sceptre. The Kingship has been abolished and entirely new arrangements have been made for the government of the islands in t'he future. These arrangements will not be definitely known till the recommendations of the Commissioners are published, but a forecast of their decision has been transmitted from Samoa, which will be no doubt near the truth. We understand the Commissioners in their report will recommend the abolition of t'he kingship and office of President, and the appointment of a Governor, with a Legislative Council consisting of three nominees of the Powers, assisted by a Native House. The Governor to have a veto over general and municipal laws. The nominees to be departmental heads; the consular, diplomatic and judicial functions to be abolished. The revenue to be raised by an increase of duties, and the polltax to be lessened. The jurisdiction of t'he Supreme Court to be increased. The Municipality, under a council and mayor, to be extended. The postoffice to be under the control of the Government. Our illustrations are the last pictorial mementoes of the brief war that are likely to appear for some time. They deal with matters and persons already familiar to our readers. ® ® ® THE OPUNAKE RIFLE CLUB. Through the exertions of Mr D. Henderson a strong rifle club now exists in Opunake. The opening took place on the Queen's Birthday, and although the weather was far from favourable a good number of members turned up at the range to have a shot. The firing took place at two ranges, and some fair scoring was made, though most of the members were colts.
