LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL.

THREE NEW APPOINTMENTS MADE. Three appointments have been made to the Legislative Council, the three gentlemen called to the Upper House being Col. Albert Pitt, of Nelson. Mr Hugh Gourley, of Dunedin, and Mr F. H. Fraser, of Wellington. Colonel Pitt, some years ago. was Parliamentary representative for the Nelson constituency. In 1897 he was appointed Commandant of the Contingent of New Zealand Volunteers sent to England in connection with the Diamond Jubilee celebrations. He will also be remembered as one of the Commissioners who enquired last year into alleged abuses in connection with t'he police force of the colony.

Mr Gourley has taken an active interest in municipal administration in Dunedin, and at the present time is Chairman of the Dunedin Harbour Board. Mr F. H. Fraser, of Wellington, has also for a great number of years interested himself in corporation matters in Wellington, and has at various times occupied prominent positions on different local bodies.
