Dear Bee, April 21 THE CHRYSANTHEMUM AND FRUIT SHOW,

which took place at the Garrison Hall, on the 19th and 20th inst.. in aid of the funds of the Horticultural Society, was a great success. So many pretty designs were exhibited that it was a matter of considerable difficulty to award the prizes. Mesdames 0. A. Fitzßoy, Lowry and Tosswell judged the ladies’ special prizes, Mrs J. F. Jardine the Society’s floral decorations, and Mr W. Jones, of Christchurch, the chrysanthemums. Mrs J. P. Thomson gained the first prize for a floral design- -a number of prettily dressed dolls dancing round a maypole covered with flowers. Miss M. Newman gained second prize. In the competition for the best decorated parasol the first prize fell to Mrs Dixon; her sunshade was covered with a pretty green creeper and yellow and white chrysanthemums: Miss Newman’s, with bronze and white chrysanthemums, came second. Other prizewinners were Miss Eva Matthews, her bicycle decorated with white chrysanthemums, with the letters V.R. and a crown over the handle-bar; Miss M. Locking-, a gentleman’s bicycle, with bronze and crimson flowers; and Miss Vera Margoliouth and Master Seton Wenley, whose wheelbarrows were beautifully decorated with chrysanthemums. The prize for the best trimmed hat was won by- Miss A. Hall; Miss Carr was successful for the best table decoration, in yellow and white chrysanthemums; and Mrs Yates for the best shower bouquet. The prizes were presented on Thursday evening by Mr R. D. D. McLean, M.H.R. Tea was given on Wednesday by Mrs Coleman and Mrs Carr, and on Thursday by Mrs G. N. Pieree and Mrs F. Bull. The hall was crow-ded on both days, and

Lady Whitmore wore a becoming dress of dark blue and white and a deep cream bonnet, with pale blue feathers; Mrs Fenwick wore a white chiffon gown, the frills on the bodice edged with pale green satin ribbon, her black hat being trimmed with black ribbon and a large white feather; Mrs Coleman wore black silk and a bonnet to match; Mrs Ronald, in a black dress, made with a Russian blouse, and a black hat; Mrs R. B. Smith, a dark green tailor-made coat and skirt, and a large black hat; Mrs Thomson, a black silk blouse, and black lace hat; Miss Hoadley wore white pique, and a sailor hat; Miss Louie Fitzßoy looked well in pink, and had a white felt hat, with white feathers; Mrs Hubert Morton, a prune cloth costume, braided with black, and a prune velvet toque; Mrs Tanner was wearing i. black lace mantle over black silk, and a bonnet with orange ribbon; Mrs Lines, in brown, with a vest of rose pink silk; Mrs Russell Dunean was in a pretty dress of biscuit-colour and pale blue; Miss Bessie Morecroft was in a navy blue eoat and skirt, and a black hat. with black feathers; Miss Balfour was also wearing navy blue, and a black hat, with orange ribbon: Mrs Davidson, black cloth, and a black bonnet; Miss Hall had a pale blue dress and a most becoming Leghorn hat; Mrs Close was in black; Mrs Jarvis. in gobelin blue, with steel trimming; Mrs Locking, black silk: Mrs Laurence was also in black, with a black lace cape: Mrs Lusk, brown coat and skirt, and black lint; Mrs Fielder

wore brown; Mrs Goldsmith, u pretty biscuit-coloured dress, trimmed W’ith guipure lace over pale blue, and a bonnet to match; Mrs Bull wore blaek and pink: Mrs Tylee, a dainty black and white dress, and a lace hat; the Misses Nairn were in black, with sailor hats: Mrs Jardine, navy bine; Mrs Randall, black: Mrs Davenport, dark brown and white: Miss Friberg looked well in a pretty pale grey doth, trimmed with white satin and chiffon, anil a large white hat to match; Miss F. Sutton was in lemon colour, with a dark brown hat: Mrs Canning wore black; Mrs Margoliouth. blue, with a white bonnet; Miss Matthews, a pretty grev and white costume; Miss Wood, navy blue, and a black hat, with pale blue feathers; Mrs Bowen wore a heliotrope brocade blouse, a lustre skirt of the same colour, and a toque to match; Mrs Dixon and Mrs Carlile both wore black; Miss Spencer, light brown coat and skirt; Miss Harrington wore a pretty white muslin dress over pale green; Mrs Morris, brown velvet, with a cream silk vest; Mrs T. Moore, a dark green coat and skirt, and a white hat. trimmed with red.. THE HIGHLAND SOCIETY'S CONCERT, held in the Theatre Royal on Wednesday, was a great success, in spite of the counter attraction of the flower show. Miss Lilian Cameron sang •Cornin’ Thro’ the Rye,’ ‘Robin Adair,' and several other Scotch songs. Miss Lily Large also contributed several Scotch songs. Mr A. Newton sang ‘The Interfering Parrot.’ Mr T. Parker recited ‘The Cottar’s Saturday Night,’ and Highland dancing was performed by Mr Mackenzie Forbes, and Messrs Campbell, Smith, Ferguson and Morrison. The music for the dances was played by Messrs R. Smith and S. Finlayson, and the accompaniments to the songs by Misses Amy Large, Newton and Cameron. THE HUNT. It. was a lovely day last Saturday for the meet of the Hawke’s Bay Hounds at Fairfax, the residence of Mr H. 11. Bridge, and there was a large number of followers, amongst whom were Mis J B. Rhodes, Mrs G. L. Sunderland, Misses Abbott, Daniels and Herrick, Messrs G. E. Groome, Price, J. H. A - Deane, J. B. Rhodes, Abbott, Norris, Giblin, F. White, H White, H. H Bridge. Arrow, and F. Herrick. Ml and Mrs Sydney Johnston, Mrs A. Giblin, and the Misses Bridge were driving. Lunch was provided by Mr Bridge, and afternoon tea at 4.30, after

an enjoyable run.
