AUCKLAND.

Bear Bee, April 18. The weather has, I think, made its mind up to break now, and our minds begin to run on balls and dances. I hear that both the Parnell and Remuera socials are to be revived this season, and there are hints of a new series altogether. The St. George's Rowing- Club ball, always one of the smartest and largest of the season, will open the carnival, and is bound to be a big success. It takes place on the 11th. and is followed in rapid succession by the Northern Club and Government House affairs. On (lit that the dresses will this year eclipse all records. THE AFTERNOON TEA AT THE CHRYSANTHEMUM SHOW was a great success, and we all enjoyed it immensely. The show itself is described elsewhere, so I will merely say that I thought that the table arranged by Miss Churton was the loveliest thing I'd ever seen. It was not for competition. Alrs (Major) George gave a LARGE LUNCHEON PARTY last week at her pretty residence, ‘Wapiti,’ Epsom. Amongst those present were Mr and Mrs Lowry (Napier), Mr and Mrs and Miss Donnelly (Hawke’s Bay), and His Excellency (Governor of "the Society Islands) M. Gullett, Madame Gallet and Afdlle. Gallet. In the afternoon the members of the Ladies’ Bowling Club came over and played bowls. Mrs George has decided that the club should continue practising until the end of May, when a prize —presented by Mrs James Russell—will be competed for. Miss Sutton, Mrs George's niece, left for the South on Thursday. She intends to spend a month at New Plymouth before she sets out for her home in Dunedin. MRS SCHWARTZ KTSSLING’S ‘AT HOME' at her beautiful residence overlooking the fort at the end of St. Stephen’s Avenue, was in honour of hei’ brother and his wife. Mr and Airs Maunsell, of Dunedin (who have been touring the Lakes and returned home on Monday). Enjoyment was somewhat marred by the atrocious weather of Thursday afternoon last. Mrs Kissling, who wore a handsome black silk, w’ith bead passementerie, was ably assisted by her three daughters. Miss Kissling wore a grey French muslin; Miss — Kissling, grey and white striped cambric: Miss Nora Kissling, pink French muslin, with silk sash and streamers. Mrs Gus Coates sang to us with great feeling, and Mrs Roberts and Mrs Dr. La wry also rendered songs very sweetly. The table decorations were very pretty, being simply’ vases of white cosmea. surrounded with cakes and sweets of every description. Amongst the guests w-ere the Rev. Canon Mac Murray, Mrs Thorne George, Mrs Arnold, Mrs Ruck, Mrs Roberts, Mrs (Dr.) Lawry, Mrs Gus Coates, etc. On Wednesday evening, at the Art Gallery, the Girls’ Boating Club dance took place. The guests, who numbered nearly two hundred, were received by twenty-five girls with powdered hair, who stood on either side, and made a most picturesque avenue. Mrs O’Rorke looked lovely in white satin trimmed with lovely yellow lace, she also wore exquisite diamonds; Mrs AI lister Clark, a rich yellow brocaded satin, with diamonds; Airs Woodroffe, white satin with demi train and lovely pearls; Mrs ’ Wardrop, black satin trimmed with white; Airs Ogle, a lovely dead rose satin covered with black lace; Mrs A. The decorations were extremely’ pretty—sculls and oars crossed, and large bows of red tied in the middle. The tables were decorated w’ith red. this being the Club’s colours. The supper was an excellent one, being chiefly done by the G.B.C. Mr Rossiter’s string band supplied very good music, and the ball was a great success. WEST END LAWN TENNIS. Fine weather favoured the ‘At Home’ which signalised the close of the tennis season on the West End lawn. The bachelors entertained their friends at tpa in dispensing which they were enthusiastically’ assisted by the ladies. There was a large attendance, and the green looked bright and attractive. Some spirited games were played, after which Air Kirker, President of the Club, presented the prizes won during the year.
