On account <»f the much-regretted illness of Mrs Cowie, wife of the Primate of New Zealand, the marriage of their only daughter to Mr Marshall, which will take place in Easter week, will he celebrated quite privately* no guests lieing invited. The great popularity of the Primate's family is lading shown by the large number of wedding presents which are being prepared some, indeed, already sent to Bishopscourt by their many friends, who .ire glad of this opportunity of testifying their sympathy and regard.

Mrs F. J. Brooke has returned to Cambridge after a long holiday at Lake Takapuna.

Mr R. C. Hughes has i»een appointed Chairman of the Recreation Grounds Hoard. New Plymouth, for the ensuing year, on the retirement of Mr W. Newman.

The engineers and ironworkers of Wellington held a picnic on an extensive scale at Day's Bay on Saturday. 11th inst. Fully 2,500 people were present, this large number being carried to and fro by the harbour steamers Duchess and Duco. The day was perfect, and everybody thoroughly enjoyed themselves, there being* also running. swimming and walking sports.

The prizes won sit the Ladies' Swimming Carnival, recently held at the Thorndon Baths. Wellington, were presented to the winners by Lad\ Douglas on Saturday morning at the Thorndon Baths.

Major and M rs Collins,who have been visiting their relatives in New Plymouth, have returned to their home in Wellington.

The Rev. Mr Bennet, Maori missionary, with a troupe of Te Aute students. intend visiting Havelock and Pieton. so as to attract interest on behalf of the Maori race. Some entertainments will be given by the students.

Mr F. S. Canning, a prominent member of the New Plymouth Bowling Club, who has left New Plymouth, had a pleasing send off on his last visit to the green. All the members drank his health.
