AUCKLAND.

Dear Bee, February 6. We hear that the Countess of Ranfurly proposes to give a Birthday Ball here in May. That would certainly be delightful. The Ladies’ Benevolent Society’s carnival, to be held shortly, will also liven us up; but how about Lent? Meantime, 1 must chronicle our social doings during the last week. Mrs (Major) Nelson George gave a most ENJOYABLE GARDEN PARTY on Wednesday last at her pretty residence, Wapiti, Epsom, to introduce some new lawa games for ladies. The clerk of the weather has behaved so strangely this year that we may be prepared for any eccentricity such as was the case on Wednesday last. The morning was atrociously hot, so the ladies naturally had all donned their lightest of summer costumes; but, alas! during the latter part of the afternoon a strong chilly wind blew which made the guests feel its power, so that many stayed inside the reception room or clustered on the verandah watching the energetic ones joining in the games of Babington, spiral pole, bowls, and quoits. The wind rather marred the enjoyment of the two first mentioned games. The ladies went into ecstasies over the game of bowls. Mrs (Major) George has brought out a ladies’ set from England; the balls are not so heavy as gentlemen use.

During the afternoon Miss Tilly rendered a song in her usual good style, which was much appreciated. Our hostess was ably assisted to entertain her many guests by her nieces, Miss Sutton, from Christchurch (who has been staying with her since Mrs George's return from England), and her sister, Mrs R. F. Sandes, of Hamilton. Afternoon tea and cakes were dispensed from the verandah, on account of the peculiar change of the weather.

Messrs Dignan, Woodhouse, Hutchison, Ware, etc. I forgot to add Major George was present, and added much to the ladies’ enjoyment of the party. A large number of the parishioners of Devonport met in Mr J. Dunning's garden on Tuesday last to bid GOOD-BYE TO THE REV. FRANK LATTER and his charming wife. Many very pretty gowns were worn, and the garden presented a most picturesque appearance as the ladies flitted hither and thither in their bright summer finery. Mrs Latter wore a dainty lilac dress, with white gem hat; Mrs Russell, handsome black, with pretty pink bonnet; Mrs Williamson (Lake

Refreshments were served during the afternoon and evening by the ladies of the parish. A presentation was also made to Mr and Mrs Latter of a purse of sovereigns. accompanied with a silver plate, suitably inscribed, the wish being that Mr and Mrs Latter would purchase some memento on which to have the

plate fixed. Mr J. Gilfillan presented the gifts to Mr Latter. Mr Ewington and Mr O. Mays, on behalf of the people, expressed their sorrow on losing such able workers from Devonport as Mr and Mrs Latter have proved themselves to be. In a few words Mr Latter most feelingly thanked the parishioners for their kindness to himself and wife, on which the band struck in with ‘For He’s a Jolly Good Fellow.’ At dark the gathering dispersed to the strains of ‘God Save the Queen,’ one and all having spent a most enjoyable afternoon. sly Cambridge correspondent informs me that Mrs James Hally gave a most charming

LITTLE DANCE at her residence last Friday evening. About thirty - five young people were present to enjoy themselves, as they always do when Mrs Hally is the hostess. The sitting-room was cleared for dancing, and the balcony was closed in for a promenade. The Misses Hally were gowned in white hailstorm muslins. A delicious supper was handed round about eleven o’clock and it was after one when the last dance was played, and the young people departed after thoroughly enjoying themselves. Misses Preece and Atkinson gave the AFTERNOON TEA on the Parnell Tennis and Croquet Lawns on Saturday last. There was a very large attendance of both ladies and gentlemen. Croquet here, as on other lawns, has its many enthusiastic players. Miss Mowbray is as often seen with the mallet in her hand as the racquet. Croquet is quite the rage on every Auckland lawn. It is the last function of that kind we are likely to see, a gathering of old identities who have been in the colony for half a century and upwards. The president (Mr B. Kent) opened the gathering _ with a short appropriate speech, which was followed by an excellent concert programme. Each of the identities was presented with a catalogue of the Exbition as a memento. An adjournment was then made to the cycling track and the grand stand. . The old identities were photographed on the grand stand. A cycle race was then arranged, so that the old folks might see an up-to-date cycle race on a banked track.
