His Excellency the Governor will most probably leave Wellington for a trip to the Cook Islands during April; and if he goes. Lord Ranfurly will proceed to the islands in one of Her Majesty’s warships.

Lord Northland, son .if His Excellency the Governor, returns to Englanif by the Gothic in March next, having come out to New Zealand by the same boat. Upon his return to England he will go up for his examination for entrance into the army.

The Mayor of Wellington (Mr J. R. Blair) has consented to open the Horticultural and Industrial Society s Exhibition at Otaki.

Amongst the visitors at the Grand Hotel. Rotorua. during Christmas week were Mrs Arthur Nathan and family. Mr and Mrs Rawson (Wellington),'Mr and Mrs A. J. Hill (Bradford. England). Mr A. G. Horton and Miss Horton. Auckland.

Miss Devenish, of New Plymouth, who has been on a trip to Sydney, returned last week.

Mrs Harris (Nelson) is again staying in Pieton with Mr and the Misses Harris.

The H. C. Seymour family, 'Tyntesfield.’ Renwick Town, are spending the New Year with their old friends in Picton. Misses M. and 1. Seymour are with Mrs Scott. Mrs and Miss Jane Seymour with Mrs Allen. Miss E. Seymour with Mrs Western, and Mr Seymour is staying with Mr Harris.

Mrs and Miss Standish, of New Plymouth. have gone for a trip to Auckland.

Mr Dennis O’Rorke returned to Auckland on Saturday last just in time to see the Old Year out and the New Year in. Mrs Dennis O’Rorke is staying in the South.

Mrs Gifford Marshall, who has been visiting her parents in New Plymouth, returned to her home in Wellington last week. Miss Hirst accompanied her.

Mr and Mrs Fenwick, who have been spending the Christmas holidays in Auckland, return this week to Napier.

Mr Dalziel, who has been paying a visit to his mother. Mrs Skeet. of New Plymouth, returned to Wellington.

Miss Davy, of Parnell. Auckland, is now on her way to Vancouver, where she will be married.

An old Thames resident. Mr James Shaw, is just now tonring the goldfields of the Hauraki Peninsula. He was the first Mayor of Coolgardie.

Mr and Mrs Fell and family, of Nelson, have gone for their annual trip to the sea side at Totaranui. where they have taken a cottage for a month. Mrs Daubany and her little girl (Sydney), Miss Huddleston and Mr Joynt are amongst their guests.

The Hon. J. McKenzie says that in returning home there was nothing he was prouder of than the fact that he did so as chief of the Gaelic Society. His Auckland audience duly appreciated the fact.

Mr William Cuthbertson, who has just severed his nine years’ connection with the Traffic Department of the Wellington Section of the Government railways, in order to undertake an appointment on the Government railways at Natal, South Africa, was on Friday last presented byGuard Williamson, on behalf of the employees with a purse of sovereigns, accompanied by many good wishes for his future. Mr Cuthbertson left Wellington by the Waikare on Saturday last, for Sydney, en route for Natal, and a large number of friends gave him a very hearty send off from the wharf.

Mrs <le Castro, Mrs Pearson and Miss Browning have left Nelson for a few weeks to camp at the sea side near Totaranui.

Some of the Northern Maoris, chiefly of the Ngapuhi tribe, wish to semi Hone Heke. M.H.R.. to England in order to lay their grievances before the British Government.

A popular musical man. Signor Hazon. from Sydney, is visiting Auckland.

Sir Robert Stout, after an invigorating trip to Rotorua and Auckland with Lady Stout, is again at home in Wellington.

Mrs Blackett and Miss S. Blackett, of Nelson, are staying in Wellington. Miss Molly Blackett has gone to Pa tea.

Major-General French. Commandant of the New South Wales Force, arrived in Wellington last week en route for Rotorua. He will see as much of New Zealand as he can during his month’s holiday.

Colonel Williams. M.P.. and Mrs and Miss Williams, who have for the last three months been visiting their daughter. Mrs Wallis, at Bishopsgate, Wellington. left for England on Saturday last, travelling home via Australia and Japan. Before his departure Colonel Williams was interviewed bv the now inevitable reporter, but wisely confined his remarks to eulogies of New Zealand hospitality, climate and scenery, tactfully refusing to make any of his views of the political condition of the country public.

Professor Liversidge, of the University, Sydney, is in the South of New Zealand, where he intends to pass part of his holiday, as a change from the heat in New South Wales.

The prisoner, Janies Jackson, who recently escaped from the Terrace Gaol, Wellington, still succeeds in evading recapture, despite the energetic and vigilant search for him continued by the authorities. In view of this vigilant search, his Christmas holidays and Christmas dinner, though enjoyed in freedom, are not likely to have been reposeful.

Mrs L. 1). Nathan, of St. Kerens, Auckland, has gone South to join her daughter. Mrs Stephen Myers, and will not return until January 14.

Mr and Mrs Strang (Foxton) are visiting Mrs Strang’s parents. Mr and Mrs Reid, at Wellington, for the holidays.

Colonel Estill has arrived in this colony. He is the new Commandant of the Salvation Army in New Zealand.

Mrs Wynn-Williams (Queensland) is visiting Airs Macpherson, in Wellington. en route to Christchurch, to visit her relatives there.

The new pastor of the Union Free ( hureh. Auckland, has arrived. He is not a stranger to this city, being the Rev. AV. L. Salter. Baptist Minister of Caversham. Dunedin.

Mr David J. Nathan, of Wellington, has been elected a director of the Wellington Patent Slip Company, Limited, in plaee of his father, Mr Joseph E. Nathan, who is residing in England.

Mr and Mrs R. Kingdon, of Nelson, have gone for a trip to the North Island.

Mrs Miller, of Wanganui, is paying New Plymouth a visit.

Mrs Moore, of the Barrack Hill Napier, is staying in Wellington.

Mr Bunting (Blenheim) spent Christmas at ‘Flaxbourne’ with Mr and Mrs Clifford.

Bishop Wilson (the Bishop of Melanesia). was in Christchurch, the guest of Bishop and Mrs Julius, at Bishopscourt, for the New Year holidays.

Mrs H. D. Bell and family have gone to their pretty residence at Lowry Bay for the holidays. Great improvements have been made to the house and grounds during the year, and it is now looking charming, the garden being a mass of flowers.

Miss Ada Broadbent and Miss Mabel Booth, of Carterton, are visiting Mrs Griffiths, at ‘The Barton,’ Blenheim.

Mr and Mrs Cranstoune Wigley are returning to Christchurch, after having spent the Christmas holidays in Wellington.

Mr Impett, of musical fame, left Wanganui for Auckland to spend his holidays amongst his old friends.

Sir Maurice O'Rorke was a passensenger to Auckland from Sydney last week.

Mrs J. H. N. Burnes with her children passed through Christchurch last week on her way to Dunedin to visit her father and mother, Mr and Mrs McNeil.

The Most Reverend the Primate gave a short address to the Maoris who were in camp at the North Shore (Auckland) on the Feast of the Circumcision at Holy Trinity Church, Devonport. The whole service was in the Maori tongue. Archdeacon Clarke preaching the sermon, and a native deacon reading the prayers.

Mr J. Gibbs (Christchurch) paid a flying visit to Wellington last week.

Mr Langguth (Austrian Consul in Auckland) did his duty to his countrymen last week by telegraphing to His Excellency the Governor of New Zealand to earnestly protest against the enforcement of the new idea that Austrians should not be allowed to land in this colony. He also similarly cabled to the Austrian Government.

The Misses Kempthorne (2), Dunedin, passed through Christchurch last week on their way to Auckland. They intend travelling via the Wanganui River and the Hot Springs, so should have an enjoyable trip, finishing up with the Exhibition.

Mr and Mrs Hugh Seth-Smith have returned to Auckland after some months’ visit to Europe.

Dr. Kingdon Fyffe narrowly escaped a serious accident in Wellington the other day through his horse coming heavily to the ground and throwing the occupants of the gig upon the pavement. Fortunately for the doctor and his groom they escaped with no further injury than a severe shaking.

Miss Florence Cotterell, who accompanied Mrs Somerville from Sydney, is visiting Mrs T. Redwood at ‘Blythefield,’ Blenheim.

Miss Cunningham and Mr Gordon Cunningham (Christchurch) are spending a few weeks in the South.

Miss Una Williams, of Hobsonstreet, Wellington, is paying a visit to Mrs John Dunean at their seaside residence at Lowry Bay, where a large party has been entertained during the holidays.

Miss Rose (Wellington) who has been staying with friends in the Wairarapa, returned last week.

Mrs Somerville, of Sydney, was in Blenheim lately on her way to Blind River, to stay with her brother, Mr C. Cotterell.

Mr and Mrs E. Preece returned to Christchurch at the end of last week, having spent a fortnight in the North Island doing the Hot Lakes, etc.

Mr Stacy Griffiths, now of Wanganui. is once more at home in Blenheim, where he spent Christmas with his parents.

Mr Carrick and Miss Martin (Christchurch) went to Timaru last week, returning on Tuesday, having very much enjoyed the few days; they also stayed at Mrs Revell’s.

Miss Bourne, who recently arrived from England, is staying with Mrs Baillie, at ‘Para,’ Marlborough. She spent a day or two in Blenheim last week, and was the guest of Mrs A. P. Green, at the Bank of New Zealand.

Mr and Mrs E. D. O’Rorke returned from England last week, and are at present staying with Mr and Mrs Heaton Rhodes. ‘Otahuna.’ They will later take up their residence at Elmwood. Papanui. for a short time.

Mrs Western. ‘The Lindens,’ Picton. has a large party of visitors, among them being Mrs Nanearrow (Dunedin), Miss Bendall (Wellington), etc.

Miss Hewlings. of Christchurch, is paying Mrs Rhodes a visit at the Grange. Wellington, and returns to the South on Thursday.

Mr and Mrs Howard (Blenheim) are visiting Mrs Speed in Picton.

Mr and Mrs Ensor. Mount Grey, entertained a large house party for Christmas, and on Monday a cricket match was played between the residents of the district and Amberly.

Mr and Mrs Gerald Tolhurst, of Te Horo. are expected in Wellington on Friday to attend the wedding of Miss Beatrice Tolhurst, which takes place on the sth January.

Mrs McLean (Archdeacon McLean), of Wanganui, is in Christchurch for a few weeks, with one little boy, staying with Mrs A. Parsons. Papanui Road.

Mrs Carey (Blenheim) is spending a week or two in Picton with Mrs A. G. Fell.

Mr and Mrs Strang (Foxton) are in Wellington, visiting Mrs Nicholas Reid.

Mr and Mrs F. M. Wallace left Christchurch on Tuesday evening for Wellington, and they purpose spending about three weeks in the North Island, when they leave for Sydney, en route for England.

Mr and Mrs A. Russell are staying in Wellington with Mrs T. C. Williams.

Mr and Mrs Meredith-Kaye (Christchurch). with their children, are at Timaru (Mrs Revell’s) for a month, and having a delightful time.

Mr and Mrs M. A. Cheek (Blenheim) have taken rooms in Picton. and have gone there, with their children. to spend a fortnight.

Miss Reynolds (England) is the guest of Mrs Charles Clark. Colombo Road South.

Mrs Fowler (Dunedin) is staying in Wellington with her mother. Mrs Hartmann.

Mrs C. Watts arrived in Blenheim by coach from Nelson on Saturday evening, to spend Christmas with Mrs Monro, at ‘Holmdale.*

Miss McAlpine, from the South, is visiting Mrs C. C. Fleming. Onehunga. She is very musical.

One of the proprietors of the Sydney ‘Morning Herald’ (Mr Geoffrey Fairfax) is visiting New Zealand for a brief relaxation from literary labours.

Miss Izard (Wellington) is the guest of Mr and Mrs Charles Pharazyn at ‘Longwood.’ Featherstone.

Miss J. Tomlinson, of Nelson, is visiting friends at the Bluff.

Dr. and Mrs Adams (Wellington) are visiting Mr and Mrs W. Barton at ‘Fareham,’ Featherstone.

Mr and Miss Harcourt, of the South, have been in Auckland during the race meetings, and also Mrs and Misses Hordern.

Mrs Stevenson, of Christchurch, has also been partaking of Auckland gaieties during the race week.

The Hon. John McKenzie, Minister of Lands, accompanied by Mrs McKenzie. hopes to leave for England in April by direct steamer, and returns to New Zealand again about September.

The Rev. J. H. Simmonds, principal of the Three Kings College, Auckland. acted as examiner for the Rawlings Scholarship Examination for 1898 in Auckland. Ponsonby School produced two of the successful candidates—Roy H. Dellow (son of a widow)- first: Stanley O. Clark (son of a printer in the ‘Herald’ Office), second; and another widow’s son, Stanley S. Deane, from the Newton East School, took the extra scholarship awarded by the trustees because Mrs Stanton’s son did not wish to continue his last year’s scholarship.

The Auckland Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and the Protection of Women and Children, is making its public appeal for funds. Mr H. Wilding is the secretary.

Mrs E. Mahony, of Auckland, is looking well after her trip to the Rotorua Hot Lakes.

Miss Runciman left Auckland by the Waihora for Buenos Ayres and England. via Wellington. Her sister accompanied her to Wellington.

Miss Rayner, of Nelson, is visiting Auckland.

Mr Walcot Wood is at present in Auckland, but returns to Christchurch with his wife and family on Thursday. Mrs Wood has much enjoyed her visit to her parents at Lake Takapuna.

Mr H. Eyre Kenny, S.M.. of Wellington. with .Mrs Kenny, have been spending their Christmas holidays in New Plvmouth.

Mr Frank W. Watt, of New Plymouth, returned to his home after a visit to England, on December 27th.

A Christchurch musical lady, Miss M. E. Bush, pianiste of the Mendelssohn Studio, is staying in Auckland for a short time.

Mr R. Corney, of New Plymouth, who has been on a pleasure trip to England, has returned to his home. Mr Angus MacDonald celebrated his lO2nd birthday at Rangiora a few days ago.

Mr H. D. Bell, of Wellington, is still unable to leave the house, owing to the accident he met with outside the Heads on a fishing excursion during the holidays.

Inspector McGovern, who has been transferred from Taranaki to Napier, left New Plymouth for his new district on Januarv 10th.

His Excellency the Governor will visit the Thames on March 28th. The Mayor. Mr H. J. Greenslade. will make all necessary arrangements for his fitting reception.

Brother R. G. Surrey was installed Worshipful Master of the Lodge Moa of Freemasons at Inglewood on Dec. 28th. There were present 110 representatives from the various Lodges in New Zealand.

Mr and Mrs Horace Stebbing, of Wellington, are in Auckland on a visit to their friends.

Dr. McCleland has been appointed surgeon to the New Plymouth gaol, viee Dr. O’Carroll, who has resigned through ill-health.

Dr. Carl Goebel, who recently visited New Zealand, describes it as the best and most interesting plaee in the world, barring tropical Java, for botanical research. Dr. Goebel is an enthusiastic botanist.

Dr. Truby King medical superintendent of the Seacliff Lunatic Asylum, is on a short visit to New Plymouth.

The Hon. A. J. Cadman paid visits to Kennedy’s Bay and the Great Barrier last week.

A young man named James Bullot, whilst fishing off a rock at Moturoa. Taranaki, on January 1. was washed into the sea with a wave, and his body has not been recovered.

Dr. Baldwin, of Auckland, is in Wellington at present.

Mr Richard C. Maclaurin. a former student of the Auckland University, has gained a prize which has not been conferred on anyone for six years. This is the one hundred guinea Yorke Prize at the Cambridge University for an essay on real property.

Mr Alfred Ransom left Auckland on Monday for Sydney. He and his wife have been staying with friends in New Zealand.

The special commissioner of the Melbourne ‘Sportsman’ (Mr S. Griffiths) has returned home via Sydney, after a pleasant trip to New Zealand.

Mr and Mrs W. Turnbull (Wellington) are staying with Mr and Mrs W. Bidwell, at ‘Rototawai.’ Featherstone.

Mrs W. Cotterill is up from Timaru on a visit to friends in Christchurch and Lvttelton.

Mr John Stevens. M.H.R.. is said to be likely to contest the Rangitikei electorate at the next election. At present he is the member for the Manawatu district.

Mrs W. Pharazyn (Wellington) has gone to the country for a short stay. Miss Pharazyn. accompanied by Miss M. Stowe, leaves for a trip to England in March.

Mr and Mrs H. Buchanan returned from Melbourne last week. Mr Buchanan having greatly benefitted by the rest and change.

Mrs Marchant (Wellington) and family are spending their holidays at Seatown.

The Hon. R. J.. Mrs and Miss Seddon were the guests of the Rev. W. and Mrs Bean. ‘The Vicarage.’ Addington, during their short stay in Christchurch.

Miss E. Rose (Wellington) is the guest of Mr and Mrs W. Martin at Featherstone for the races.

Mrs Morison and family (Wellington) are staying at their residence at Otaki for the holidays.

Mr and Mrs F. Tendall (Christchurch) have gone for a few weeks to Kowai Bush.

As usual, quite a number of Wellington families are just now out of town.

Mrs W. Turnbull and Mrs Baldwin (Wellington) have gone to Rangitikei, where they will visit their mother. Mrs W. Johnston.

Mrs Alfred Brandon (Wellington) and family have gone to their country residence at Pororui.

Mrs Longdon (Wellington) and family are staying at Plimerton.

Mrs Stewart (Wellington) and family have gone to Plimerton for the holidays.

Mrs W. Ferguson (Wellington) is spending the holidays at Otaki.

Mr Jesse Timson. of Dunedin, is in Christchurch and gives an organ recital in the Cathedral on Friday evening.

The Ven. Archdeacon Williams passed through Auckland on Saturday from Russell, en route for Napier.

Mrs Gee. of Wellington, is paying a visit to Christchurch, where she is staying with her sisters, the Misses Bucklev.

Miss Billings (Sister Minnie) arrived in Auckland by the Elingamite on Monday, as a deputation from the New Guinea Mission. She was met at the wharf by the Rev. H. R. and Mrs Dewsburv.

It is probable that the Opposition candidate for the Waiapu seat at the next general election will be Mr C. Dean Pitt.

Miss P. Gibson (Dunedin) is the guest of Mrs Arthur Pearce at Lowry Bay, Wellington.

Mr and Mrs W. Reece and family are at New Brighton for a month’s change. Mrs (Dr.) Collins (Wellington) and her family are spending the holidays at their pretty country residence at Mungaroa. a few miles from the Upper Hutt.

Mr and Mrs Eliot Eliott have returned home to Dunedin after spending three months amongst their manyfriends in the North Island.

Mrs Biss (Wellington) has returned from her trip to Dunedin.

During the voyage of the Waikare to New Zealand. Bishop Wilson (Melanesia). who was one of the passengers. held divine service on board on Christmas Day, when £4 13/ was collected for the funds of the National Shipwreck Society. In the evening his Lordship gave a capital little address on mission work, when the sum of £7 5/ was subscribed for his Melanesian Funds.

Mrs Anson and Miss Turnbull (Wellington) have gone for a bicycle tour to Otaki.

Mrs Howie (Christchurch) went to Timaru on Monday to take part in the Caledonian concert to be given there that night.

Lady Hector and family have taken a house at Day's Bay, and are residing there for the holidays.

Mr and Mrs A. P. Green (Blenheim) went to Pieton to spend the Christmas holidays, and put up at the Terminus Hotel. They have enjoyed the time so much that they have decided to stay over New Year. Mr Green returning to Blenheim for the few days the Bank is open.

Miss V. Rawson (Wellington), is staying with friends in the Wairarapa.

Mr William Pharazyn, of Thorndon. Wellington, has left on a short visit to Nelson.

Mr F. W. Carey, of Wellington, has come to Picton. and is with Mr Gerald Fitz-Gerald, of the same place, and Mr A. G. Fell, of Picton, and his sons, cruising in Queen Charlotte’s Sound. The two first named have brought their Rob Roy canoes, in which they paddle in attendance on the large boat, in which the others travel.

Mr and Mrs A. Tyree returned to Christchurch at the end of last week from a short visit to Auckland, and have now gone to White Cliffs with the children.

Professor and Mrs < lark (Christchurch), who were the guests of Mrs Grace, in Wellington, left for Hawke’s Bay this week.

Mrs W. R. C. Erson. of Onehunga. had a rather alarming experience last week. Her youngest child, aged three, set tire to a bed vallance through playing with matches. Dr. Erson was out at the time, but Mrs Erson, assisted by the servants, managed to put out the fire. The damage caused is estimated at about £5O.
