PICTON.

Dear Bee > October 18. THE BACHELORS AND SPINSTERS’ BALL, held in the Public Hall on Friday, was as successful as it could possibly be though the news of an old Picton boy s death put somewhat of a dampen on the proceedings, besides keeping a great many Picton and Blenheim friends away. Unfortunately, it was impossible to postpone the ball, as the sad news only arrived on the Thursday, and there were no mails going out to the country districts, where many of the guests resided. The parents of the poor young fellow, who was beloved of all classes and conditions here, recognised the fact that there were difficulties in the way of putting off the ball at that late hour of the proceedings, and expressed a wish that it should go on. Relations, of course, bad to withdraw. The spinsters who carried on the affair were: Miss (A. P.) Seymour, in black; Miss Stace (Robin Hood Bay), in pink; Miss S. Philpotts looked well in rose coloured broche; Miss Gilfillan, black; Miss Western, pink silk; Miss F. Western in Royal blue, trimmed with white; Miss Mirrie Philpotts, pink silk; Miss Fell, cream silk; Miss E.Philpotts, white silk; Miss M. Fell, pale green silk; Miss E. Western (2), Chaytor, etc., etc. The Blenheim guests were: Mrs Thompson, in black satin: Mrs Howard, black silk; Mrs Griffiths, blaek silk and very handsome point lace; Mrs Adams, black; Mrs P. Douslin, handsome pink and green broche; Mgs A. P. Green, handsome red silk, with brocade front; Miss Essie Waddy, who was considered the belle of the room, looked sweet in simple white silk; Miss Ella Waddy also looked very nice in white silk; Miss B. Mills looked nice in pink; and her sister, Miss Olive Mills, in white; Miss Farmar was in white; and her sister in pale blue; Miss Adams in green; Miss Moore, yellow; Miss Carey, pale blue. The Picton lady guests were: Mrs Allen, in black broche, and white lace; Mrs Kenny in handsome black lace; Mrs Rutherford, black silk, and handsome opera cloak; Mrs Speed, black merv.; Mrs Morris, white spotted muslin; Mrs Fell, black silk and handsome gold necklet; Mrs Stow, blaek merv.; Mrs Seely, black, with red silk vest; Mrs Philpotts, blaek silk gown; Miss Nora Allen, pale blue China silk; Miss Harris, black; Miss Hamilton, pink. There was not a crowd of men, consequently there were some wall flowers, but they enjoyed the fun of looking on. The men were: Messrs Rutherford, Dobbie. Kenny, D.vmock, Riddell, Macshane, Fell (2), Horton, Griffiths, Colt, Robertshaw, Fish, Stow (2), Harris, Adams, Mirams, Mcßeth. The decorations were greatly admired. Tn the centre was a huge bell, made of lycopodium and arum lilies, which held up crossed ropes of lycopodium. The lower end of the hall was trellised with lycopodium, and the upper end was a mass of ferns and arums, flags and gege. JEAN.
