AUCKLAND.

Dear Bee, October 2 4. The Auckland Bowling Green was formally opened last Saturday, when the attendance was very large. The pavilion was gaily deeorated with bunting and cream lilies. The afternoon tea was provided by Mrs Myers. Mrs Ross, Mrs Thomson ami Mrs Hugh Campbell. The table was daintily decorated with red poppies, yellow and blue irises, intermingled with white ox eye daisies and green ferns. A band provided excellent music. The Auckland Croquet. Club also held their opening day on this <x-ea-sion, their afternoon tea was prettily laid out in their pavilion on the opposite side of the green, the table being decorated with bum-lies of various spring flowers. The guests of both these functions intermingled with one another, so that it was impossible to distinguish one from the other. A large meeting of ladies was held last Wednesday afternoon at ‘Stadacona,’ Reniuera, the pretty residence of Mrs Ware, to discuss the project of a Ladies’ Club in Auckland. It was decided to hold a meeting in town during the month. A provisionary committee was formed to arrange date, and place, etc., for this public meeting. Amongst those present were:—Mrs C. The hall was gaily and tastefully decorated with flag's and evergreens, Japanese umbrellas, lanterns, etc., which, together with the bright and pretty costumes of the dancers, made a scene both charming and beautiful. Burke’s band supplied perfect music. The march was very well done, and finished with the Lancers, which were danced in perfect time. It was led by Miss Minnie Oswald and Master Fred Bach, followed by over 80 pupils, who, by the freshness and variety of their dresses, made a pretty picture. Amongst the fancy dances gone through with grace and precision were the Skirt Dance, the Hussars. Cachucha, Minuet, and Gavotte, and the new dance Washington Post, all being danced in a way that showed that much pains were taken in teaching them. A large number of spectators were present, who warmly applauded the youthful performers. JUVENILE FANCY DRESS BALL. A very enjoyable Juvenile Plain and Fancy Dress Ball in connection with the Ponsonby ‘At Homes’ took place last Friday evening. The attendance was much larger than usual. The young people looked well in their varied garb—quaint, grotesque and fantastic, and a very pleasant time was spent. The supper was under the supervision of the Ladies’ Committee of the ‘At Homes,’ who had taken great pains with the floral decorations, and had loaded the table with an in ex. haustible variety of dainties.
