BOWLING.

The Ponsonby Bowling Club opened its season on Saturday last under very favourable circumstances. The weather was all that could be desired, and the greens in good order. The Newton Brass Band, under the leadership of Mr Adams, dispersed music at intervals during the afternoon. The President (Mr Jas. Edmiston) addressed a few remarks to the visitors and bowlers from sister clubs and stated that the Club was in a flourishing condition and new members to the number of 15 had joined this season, with more to follow. Mention was made of the fact that no doubt a good number of bowlers from the South would be up in Auckland during the Exhibition season and he had much pleasure in throwing open the Ponsonby green for their use. The lawn tennis grounds in connection with the Club would be open for play in two or three weeks. The President departed from the stereotyped form of throwing the ‘jack’ and called upon his youngest daughter, Miss Nellie Edmiston, to perform that part of the ceremony, which she did by throwing the ‘jack’ in a direct line up the rink amidst cheers. Sides were then drawn and a match President (Mr Edmiston) v. Vice-President (Mr Kirker) took place, the President winning by 11 points. The following teams took part for the President and Vice-President respectively:—No. 1 Rink —(P) Moritzson, Robinson, Haselden, Edmiston (skip), 9 v. (V.P.) Matthews, Steele, R. Kirker) has invited the Ponsonby bowlers to his green on Saturday next, and it is anticipated there will be a large muster notwithstanding the. invitation issued to attend Grafton (Auckland) and Devonport bowling greens, which open on that day.

The Wellington Bowling Club’s season was opened on Saturday afternoon by the President of the Club, Mr John Ross, a very large attendance of players a ml onlookers being present on the greens. A feature of the afternoon was a match between members of the Wellington Bowling Club and two rinks of visiting Parliamentarians, the

legislators eventually winning by three points. A very large number of ladies, including Mrs Ross and her daughters, were present, Mrs Ross receiving the visitors and afterwards providing a most sumptuous afternoon tea. The Thorndon Bowling Club opens the season in Wellington on Saturday next at 2.30 p.m. REMUERA CLUB. There was a large attendance at the opening of the season of the above Club on Saturday last, many ladies being among the guests present. The grounds, gaily decorated with flags, presented a most attractive appearance. During the afternoon musical selections were given by the Messrs Mulieri’s band, and tea was dispensed by Mesdames Brown, Finlayson, Dowell, and Ranson, assisted by a number of young ladies. Thanks to the position of the grounds and the skill of the superintendent, the greens were in excellent order, and a splendid afternoon’s play was indulged in. The President (Mr John Brown) at the opening of the proceedings referred to the triumphs the Club had already won. It had secured the pennant flag in the second year of its existence, and he hoped it would maintain its pre-eminence. If it were worsted it would not be for want of pluck and hard play. Thanking the ladies for their attendance there that afternoon, the President expressed the hope that they would make the grounds a frequent resort on Saturday afternoons. At the conclusion of his remarks he threw the ‘jack’ across the green and declared it open for the season. The usual match, President v. Vive-President, was then played, and resulted in a win for the former's team by 17 points. The scores were as follow: — No 1 rink.—President: D. Ross, Sibbald, A. Rose, J. The game of bowls is quite as popular in the South Island as it is in the North. The picture we present in this issue is from a photograph by Mr Ferrier, and was taken on Thursday afternoon, 6th inst., when the Timaru Club opened their season. This club is in a first class position financially, and has a membership of about 85. There is a splendid green, and one of the best arranged and most comfortable pavilions in New Zealand. For the opening ceremony the club issue invitations, and on this occasion about 400 visitors were present, during the afternoon. Tea was dispensed to all and sundry in a large marquee adjoining the pavilion, and the Timaru Garrison Band contributed to the enjoyment of the day, with a choice selection of music. The grounds were gay with strings of bunting, ample seating was provided, and everybody seemed to enjoy themselves. The weather was everything that could be desired.
