WELLINGTON.

Dear Bee, July 6. A large and very enjoyable EUCHRE PARTY

was given by Miss Holms on Saturday last, at her residence, Hawke-stone-street. All the little card tables were arranged in the drawing room, and in the dining room a very sumptuous supper was laid, the table being prettily decorated with flowers. Miss Holms wore a black velvet gown, with white lace on the bodice. Mr and Mrs Stuart Holms (a bride and bridegroom), who are paying a visit to Wellington, were among the guests, the latter wearing a beautiful gown of white brocaded satin, with long fluffy lace sleeves; Mrs H. D. Crawford looked nice in a black silk skirt and a yellow silk blouse: Mrs Baldwin wore, white satin with chiffon; and her sister, Mrs Turnbull, was in black; Mrs (Dr.) Collins, deep red velvet, with white lace round the corsage; Mrs T. M. Wilford wore a pretty white gown; Mrs Tan Dunean, black gown, the bodice trimmed with white lace and violets: Mrs 11. Pearce were the lucky winners of the first prizes, and the ‘Booby’ prizes fell to the lot of Mrs Stuart Holms and Mr Maitland. The Wellington ROWING CLUB BALL was held last Monday in Thomas’ Hall. There must have been fully 150 people present, who all seemed to thoroughly enjoy their evening’s amusement. The usually bare looking hall was made to look bright and pretty with artistic decoration, and the floor was good. The music was supplied by King's band. Mr W. Ross (Captain) and Mr J. Mead (Secretary) are to be congratulated on the successful result of the ball. Among those present were the two vicepresidents of the club (Sir Robert Stout and Mr John Hutcheson, M.H.R.). the Hon. T. Thompson, Mr George Fisher, M.H.R., and others. Another very successfid ball was that given by the WELLINGTON GUARDS, which was held in Thomas’ Hall last Tuesday. The hall was gaily decorated with flags, etc., and Mr Godber supplied a. very good supper. Among those present were the Earl and Countess of Ranfurly, Hon C. Hill-Trevor, Captain Brown, of H.M.s. Tauranga, Captain Ward, Captain Alexander, Sir Arthur and Lady Douglas, Mr and Mrs Harcourt. Mr and Mrs Biss, Mr and Mrs Morison, Miss Arkwright, the Misses McKenzie, Miss Fisher, Col. Pole Penton, Major Madoeks. etc. The Countess wore a beautiful satin gown, the corsage brilliant with diamonds; Lady Douglas was in a black gown, trimmed with cream lace; the Misses Douglas, pretty cream figured gowns; Miss Harcourt, cream brocade, the bodice trimmed with chiffon and passementerie; Mrs Biss wore blaek; Mrs Morison, broivn and gold shot silk: Miss Arkwright, cream satin, trimmed with ehiffon; Miss McKenzie, pale blue, and her sister in white; Miss Fisher, white silk and lace. In the first set of Lancers His Excellency danced with Miss Harcourt, and Lady Ranfurly with Captain Duthie. Minifie’s string band supplied splendid dance music. Last Saturday week was MONTHLY MEDAL DAY at the Miramar Golf Links, and the perfect golfing weather which prevailed tempted an unusually large attendance of golfers out to the links. The competition was again won by Mrs Adams, who has now won it three times, Mrs W. Turnbull being next with two wins to her credit. Mrs Adams is getting to be. one of the steadiest lady golfers in the Club, and her present handicap of 22. which is rather a long one, will no doubt soon come down by leaps and bounds. The best scores handed in during the afternoon were:- Mrs Adams, 94, handicap 22; total 116. Miss Brandon. 96, handicap 30; total 126; Mrs W. Turnbull, 97, handicap 20; total 117: Miss Madge Bell, 99, handicap IS, total 117. Mrs Bell has presented a very handsome silver bowl for annual com[H*tition among the members of the Wellington Golf Clubs as a championship prize for Mixed Foursomes, the prize to l>e held for six months by each of the winners. The first competition for it takes place at Miramar next Saturday, in the form of a Handicap Bogey Match, over 15 holes, the partners to be drawn for. On the 13th August the annual competition for the Daniels’ Cup will take place, and of course great interest centres in the championship of the. Club, which will be played for on 23rd and 30th July, and on 6th August. A HOCKEY MATCH Law v. Allcomers, was played at Island Bay last Saturday week, and after some good play on both sides, resulted in a win for the legal fraternity

by 7 goals to 6. Cooper scoring’ no less than 3 goals for the winning side, I*. Fitzherbert 2, and Wilson and Wedde 1 each. The most prominent player for the Allcomers were Organ, who scored 3 goals, and Broad, Dixon and Jackson, who scored 1 each.
