When a lady is sitting to a Parisian photographer for a portrait the operator does not, in a perfunctory manner, coldly request her to look pleasant now, if you please. He says to her in the most natural and graceful manner in the world: ‘lt is quite unnecessary to ask madam to look pleasant; she could not look otherwise.’ The lady, of course, acknowledges the compliment with her most gracious and high-bred smile. ‘Click!’ goes the camera, and the picture is obtained, revealing the sitter to the greatest possible advantage.
