Mendelssohn's ‘Elijah’ was given by the members of the Dunedin Choral Society in the Garrison Hall. The hall was packed to excess. Those who took the principal parts in ‘Elijah" were: Mrs Manson, the Misses Clara Mongredin, L. TTeseder, Millie Jacobs, Messrs H. Smith, H. L. Brett, Jones, and Manson. The chorus was composed of over 200 male and female voices. Needless to say, the oratorio was a great success. A large number of friends of the Auckland Rowing Club were present at the boathouse on Saturday last, the occasion being the first round of trial fours for the season. The first crews to compete were: Gooch (stroke), Lovett, Tapper, Strong, Caro (eox.); Hardie (stroke), Buttery, Brown, S. Diamond. The former crew won by scarcely half a length. This race proved to be the most exciting of the afternoon. The remaining two events were won by Brodies crew. The final was rowed on Monday evening, between Gooch s anti Brodie’s crews, and the result was a win for the latter. Caro acted as eox. Several crews have been selected to compete ait the forthcoming regatta at Hamilton, ami are now training.
