ON Monday afternoon His Excellency the Governor, accompanied by Captain Alexander, paid a visit to 11.M.5. Mildura, and a salute was fired by the warship in honour of the event. Lord and Lady Ranfurly and suite leave Wellington very shortly for Dunedin. Miss Monro (Taranaki) is staying with Mrs H. F. Thompson, in Blenheim. Lady Prendergast (Wellington) is staying with her niece, Mrs Booth (Nelson). Miss Cotterell, having spent a fortnight with Mrs Vavasour, at Ugbrooke, has returned to Blenheim, where she is staying with Mrs Griffiths. Nirs Tolhurst has issued over 600 invitations for a large afternoon ‘At Home' on the 4th December, at ‘Gondhurst,’ the entertainment being given in honour of the members of the Wellington Diocesan Synod, which opened on Wednesday afternoon in the Diocesan library. Nir J. C. Honeyfield, of Moturoa (Taranaki), has presented to the church at Tataramaika a very handsome font of carved wood, which was made at the Sash and Door Factory, New Plymouth. The annual distribution of prizes at St. Patrick's College, Wellington, takes place on Tuesday evening. His Excellency the Governor consented to perform the ceremony, and Archbishop Redwood also announced his intention of being present upon the occasion. Mr Nlostyn Webb Bowen (Sydney) is spending a short holiday with his people in Nelson. Mr and Mrs Cawte, with their family, left Blenheim last Friday, and are going to settle in the Wairarapa, near Masterton. Mr Cawte is an old resident, and has always taken a great interest in cricket, iii which he will be much missed this season. Miss Linton has returned to Blenheim from Dumgree, where she has spent several months with Mrs Renwiek. She is now visiting Mrs Mead. .Mrs Howie (Nelson) has been obliged to abandon her intended visit to England owing to ill health. She is now in Sydney, but is expected back in Nelson shortly. Though sorry that she is obliged* to give up the trip. Mrs Howie's many friends are delighted at the prospect of seeing her again so soon. Nirs Linton (Pieton) made a short visit to Blenheim, arriving on Saturday evening, returning on Monday morning. Miss Clarke, who has been paying New Plymouth a visit, has returned to her home in Wanganui. Mrs Craddock-Beauchamp, Anikiwa, spent the early part of last week with Mrs J. C. Chaytor, at Marshlands, and the latter part with Mrs Allen, in Pieton. Mrs Renwiek (Blenheim) is spending a few days in Nelson, The Rev. A. H. and Mrs Sedgwick returned home to Pieton on Fridaylast. Miss Ethel Sealy accompanied them on a* visit. Mr W. Sealy (Auckland) is spending a few days with his people in Nelson. Miss Verna Johnston, of Wellington, who has been spending a week or two with her sister, Nirs A. Mowat, Springlands, Blenheim, returned to Wellington on Monday. Nliss Hunter Brown has returned to her home in Nelson after a long visit to Christchurch. A most interesting address was delivered by Dr. Nlartin on Tuesday night to the members of the Wellington Philanthropic Society, in which he described his travels in Europe and the islands of the Pacific. Mr Maling Greensill, of Mahan Sound, is in Picton at present, laid up with a bad foot, caused by stepping on a nail. Miss Pitt, of Nelson, who has been staying in the Awatere with Mrs Renwick, is now with Mrs Vavasour, at Ugbrooke, but sometime next week will return to Blenheim, where she will again be the guest of Mrs Cleghorn. Captain and Mrs Cornwall, of New Plymouth, have gone for a trip to the Hot Springs, on account of the Captain's health. Mr Granville Beauchamp, Anikiwa, Picton, travelled overland to Christchurch lately. He has a roving commission—to see the country, and pay his way by shearing at the different stations en route. Miss Edwards accompanied her father, Judge Edwards, to Blenheim on the occasion of his recent official visit there. The Rev. Janies Chisholm has been relieved of parochial work until the end of this year, in order that he may devote his whole time to writing the Jubilee history of the Presbyterian Church in Otago. Mr Burden (Blenheim) spent a few days this week at Mrs Alien's, in Picton. Mr Tom Humphries, from Wellington, is on a visit to New Plymouth. Revs. Evans. Robinson, and Walker, of New Plymouth, are at present in Auckland on account of the Synod. Mrs Walker and two children, and Miss Flossie Evans also went up. Mrs Chaytor, of Marshlands, passed through Picton on Thursday on her way to Nelson to visit her mother at Motueka. Mr W. G. Weston, of the Feilding branch of the Bank of New South Wales, has been transferred to New Plymouth. Mr C. C. McMillan, of Auckland, went to Gisborne last week for the purpose of installing Brother T. Dawson as Worshipful Master of Lodge Turanganui, 1480, E.C. Misses A. and E. Dobbie gave an enjoyable bathing picnic to the girls attending Mrs Linton's school on Saturday. The party, consisting of Mr and Mrs Dobbie, Misses Dobbie (4), Master Dobbie. and Misses Linton (2) Allen, Fell. Sealy (2), Rutherford (3) Cawte. and Carey, went up Esson’s Valley, and spent a pleasant afternoon bathing, playing games, and havingtea. The Revs. R. Bavin, H. Bath, S. G. Fielding, and J. Bowes, left Auckland for Sydney by the Anglian last week. Miss Gilfillan (Pieton) has gone to stay with Mrs John Dunean at the Grove. The Rev. John Dart. West Coast, is spending a short holiday with his people in Picton. Mrs H. J. R. Tilly fell from her bicycle at Wanganui on Saturday, and sustained a fracture of one of the small bones of her leg. Mrs James Greensill has gone to Anikiwa for a week to stay with Mrs Beauchamp. Mrs Harry Biggs, from Auckland, is on a visit to New Plymouth. Mrs Kilgour. of Parnell, has let her house for three months, and is going to stay with her married daughter. Mrs Goodsoil, at. Hawern. Miss Kilgour accompanies her mother. Mrs and Miss Polson, of Wanganui, are paying a visit to Napier. Mr and Mrs C. Gonlter and Mr A. Bell drove through from the Wairau for the Show. Mrs Gerald Tolhurst is staying in Wellington with Mrs Tolhurst.

Mra Canning, of Ellerslie, the Bluff Hill, Napier, is staying at Petane. Mr Weston, from Feilding, is up on a visit to New Plymouth. Amongst the many in Christchurch for Carnival week were Mr, Mrs, and Miss Acton-Adams. Mr J. Tinline, Mt James Bell, Hillersden. and Mr W. Wastney, Nelson. Mrs S. Wright, who has been staying in New Plymouth, has returned to her home in Wanganui. Mrs F. H. Wilson, Cashmere, has gone to stay with Mrs Lance, at Horsley Downs, for a change. Mr Jacob, who has been on a visit to Auckland, has returned to New Plymouth. Mrs Macßae (Featherston) is staying with Mrs Riddiford at the Hutt. Mr and Mrs Lascelles have left Christchurch for their new home at Lake Heron. Mr F. Thomson, of the Bank of New Zealand, in New Plymouth, has gone for a trip down South. Christchurch friends were very glad to welcome back Mrs Cunningham, of Merivale, and the Messrs McClatchie and daughters, who like our other recent arrivals have had a most enjoyable trip to the Old Country. Mr H. D. Bell, who has retired from the Mayoral Chair of Wellington, has been succeeded by Mr J. 11. Blair, who polled 1359 votes against Mr George Fisher’s 576. Mrs Buekleton (Auckland) is on a visit to her mother, Mrs Graham, The Lodge, Hamilton. Mr IL Brett has returned to Auckland from his southern visit. Mrs O'Neill and Mrs Wallnutt have returned to Hamilton after a week’s stay at Te Aroha. Miss Cussen has returned to Hamilton after a month’s holiday at Auckland and Coromandel. Mr and Mrs George Rhodes, Claremont, are the guests of General Sir J. B. and Miss Fraser-Tytler. at Merivale. Mr C. D. Whitcombe gave a lecture in the Theatre Royal, New Plymouth, December Ist, on ‘Tonga,’ which was very interesting, and the lecturer was frequently applauded. Mrs Lane has once more returned to Christchurch from a trip to Sydney. looking very well indeed. She stayed a few days with her daughter, Mrs G. Gould, Avonside, and has now gone home to Balcairn. Mr and Mrs W. J. Rainger left Auckland for Christchurch, to stay with Mr and Mrs Walcott Wood. Mr J. Mackay has been elected Chairman of the Stratford County Council. In Christchurch there has been a good deal of flitting about since Carnival week. Miss Fell (Nelson) is staying with Miss Wynn-Williams, Latimer Square: Mrs M. S. ( ampbell is back from Napier. Mr and Mi's Gordon accompanying her for a short visit to Christchurch. Mr Wharton, llighfield (Ainuri) has been far from well lately and left last week for a trip to England, hoping to benefit by the change and rest. The Annual Show of the New Plymouth Horticultural Society was opened in the Drill Hall on December 2nd. when the display of flowers and vegetables was quite equal to previous occasions. Mr Pulleine. Bank of New Zealand, Blenheim, is in charge of the Picton branch during Mr Stow's absence. Mr Stow is attending the sitting of the Supreme Court on the' special j"ryMr Howie has returned to Nelson after spending a pleasant holiday in the North Island.

Miss McClatchie, from Christchurch, is on a visit to New Plymouth. Mr A. Elliott, of Whangtirei, Auckland, has been on a short visit to New Plymouth. He wax one of the judges at the Taranaki Agricultural Show. The Westralia last week conveyed the Rev. W. G. Parxonxon and the Rev. George William to Lyttelton from Auckland. Mr W. J. Cousins (tenor) and Mr Edgar Walton (bass), of Auckland, will visit New Plymouth about the middle of December, for the purpose of taking part in the oratorio of the ‘Messiah,* which is to be performed in that town. Rev. Mr and Mrs Boyes, from Stratford. New Plymouth, are on a visit to Auckland. Mr Faris, station-master at Inglewood. was recently presented with a purse of sovereigns. Mr Faris has been transferred to Adendale.
