Hlb EXCELLENCY THE GOVERNOR is to open the Palmerston North Show on Wednesday the 17th November. He will go and return in one day.

Mr F. H. Ibbetson, clerk of the Court in Masterton, has recovered his usual health by a few days' trip to Wellington.

Messrs Upton and Batger have been re-elected, in Auckland, directors of the South British Insurance Company.

Twenty-five Dunedin ladies passed the recent nursing examination held after the conclusion of the St. John Ambulance Association lectures.

Miss Agnes Scopes, of Manukau Heads, is now at the Kotorua Sanatorium.

Miss Minnie Kenworthy, of Patea, who has just returned from a three months' visit to Mr and Mrs Derritt, of Auckland, is now making a short stay with Mrs Handy in New Plymouth.

At the annual meeting of the Auckland French Literary Society (LAlliance Francaise) a vote expressing regret at the necessity for Mr SethSmith's absence from the colony on account of ill-health was passed. Mr Seth-Smith is Vice-President of the Society.

Mr R. G. Pardy, who has been for many years reporter on the “Taranaki Herald,” was a few days ago (when severing his connection with that paper) presented by the staff with a silver-mounted walking stick, a tobacco pouch and a cigar holder; also a pipe by Mr W. H. Penn, the editor. Some of the old members of the “Daily News,” to which paper Mr Pardy was once attached, also presented him with a pair of gold sleeve links.

Mr C. Ransom, manager of the Northern S.S. Company, returned to Auckland last week from a visit to Wellington.

Mr Alexander Sligo has been returned for Dunedin City, taking the place left vacant by Mr Fish’s death. The election was very orderly. Mr Sligo is not a Government supporter.

Mr E. G. Tegetmeier, of Wellington, is touring the Auckland district with Mrs Tegetmeier. They only intend to spend a few days in the North.

Miss Payne, of Wellington, has been appointed Matron of the Westport Hospital.

An address has been presented to Captain R. E. Smith, of the S.S. Taviuni, by the passengers, praising his conduct in the late cyclonic gale.

Dr. Aubin, a young medico, has lately settled in Ponsonby, Auckland, taking Mrs Hardy’s house in Ponsonby Road. Being a bachelor, he is sure to be a great favourite.

Miss May Whitelaw returned to Auckland this week after a delightful visit South.

Mrs and Miss Brett have also returned to Auckland.

A pleasant piece of luck in the shape of promotion to the charge of the Mechanician’s Telegraph Office in Christchurch has befallen Mr M. Maloney, of that department in Dunedin. He was the recipient of some valuable presentations prior to his departure.

Mr Turnbull (Napier) has been visiting Nelson friends.

The Rev. T. J. Pinfold has been invited to remain another year at the Wesleyan Church, Reefton district.

Mrs Renwick, of Dumgree, Awatere. passed through Blenheim on her way to Nelson last week.

Mrs Eyre-Kenny (Wellington) is visiting her Nelson friends. At present she is the guest of Mrs W. Atkinson.

Mr M. Niccol, of Auckland, has gone down to Wellington.

Miss CottereH (Sydney) is staying with Mrs Carey, Grove Road, Blenheim.

Mr Vincent E. Rice, the energetic secretary of the Board of Education, Auckland, is having a holiday.

Mr J. McKerrow, Chairman of the Lund Purchase Board, and Mr McMillan, Valuer, are visiting Blenheim just now, and, accompanied by Mr Adams, Commissioner of Crown Lands, Blenheim, and Mr J. H. Redwood, of the Land Board, have gone to inspect Starborough, Ugbrooke, and Flaxbourne, with the view of opening up these properties for settlement.

Mr J. M. Brigham, of Auckland, has just completed a quarter of a century’s service as Secretary, etc., of the Auckland Harbour Board. This fact is to be suitably engrossed, sealed with the Board's own seal, and presented to Mr Brigham. The document is also to record the highly satisfactory manner in which Mr Brigham has fulfilled his duties; also to mark the Board's appreciation of his zeal and loyalty.

The Hon. W. M. Boult arrived irt Christchurch last week from Wellington.

Captain E. Phillips, late of the Talune, is now in command of the Mararoa.

Mr S. I. Fitch has gone to Nelson to commence his duties as Assistant Government Pomologist. Mr Fitch is an expert fruitgrower, and comes from Avonside, Canterbury.

The Rev. E. V. Blakiston is at present in Wellington.

The popular Vicar of Naseby, the Rev. S. Hawthorne, is to be the new Vicar of Holy Trinity Church, North Shore, Auckland. Great regret is expressed in Naseby at the resignation and departure .of Mr and Mrs Hawthorne.

The poultry expert, Mr James Henderson, is visiting Auckland on professional matters intent.

The new Chief Valuator for the Government under the Advances to Settlers Act, Mr T. Kennedy MacDonald, of Wellington, was lately in Nelson, as was also Mr McGregor, Inspector of Asylums.

One of the directors of the HuddartParker Company, Mr J. L. Webbe, arrived in Auckland by the Westralia on Sunday from the South.

At the last run of the Pakuranga Hunt Club (a point to point steeplechase) Mr P. Kinloch was uulucky enough to break his collarbone.

Miss Alma Stanley wears over £ 3,000 worth of jewellery in ‘My Friend from India,’ which include a magnificent presentation necklet from the Duchess of Marlborough. This valuable .collection of jewels is taken from and returned to the bank every evening. This fact is mentioned for the especial benefit of Bill Sykes and Co., of Auckland.

Mr and Mrs G. G. Stead and family. Mr and Mrs I. Gibbs, and Mr and Mrs McDougall, returned to Christchurch from their trip to England. Captain Anderson and party are on board the lonic at Hobart.

Mrs and the Misses Batchelor (Dunedin) are the guests of Mrs Richmond, The Cliffs, Nelson.

Mr D. Wilson, the young walking champion of Australasia, is to receive a great reception on Wednesday night at his home, Papakura, near Auckland. The residents of the district are naturally proud of him, and intend to warmly display their approbation.

Miss Ida Thorne (Auckland) has been very ill, but I am glad to hear she is now l»etter.

Mr and Mrs C. G. Dalgety are staying in Mr Hugh Buchanan's old house. Hereford-street, Linwood, Christchurch.

Mr W. Martin, of Mount Albert, returned to Auckland from his successful athletic meeting in Sydney last Monday. He and Messrs Holder aud McKean remained a week longer than the others in Sydney.

By special request of His Excellency, Mrs Howie sang at the Governor's reception in Wellington on Tuesday.

Miss Nina Moore (Nelson) went to Wellington, and played Mrs Howie's accompaniment on the piauo at Government House.

Mr and Mrs F. Waymouth are returning to Christchurch via Vancouver, and are expected daily.

Mrs Renwick (Blenheim) is spending a few days in Nelson.

Sir G. and Lady Clifford have been at Coker's, Christchurch, for the week.

The many friends of Mr George Henderson, father of Mr Janies lieu derson, 01 Christchurch, were very shocked to hear of his suddeu death in Sydney this week.

Mr G. Fenwick, of Dunedin, arrived by the Te Auau from England via Melliourne aud Sydney, having journeyed across in the Mouowai.

Miss Stuart, of Wellington, has returned with Miss Griffiths to Wanganui. The latter has had a pleasant stay in the Empire City.

Miss Harris, who has been visiting relations in the Pelorus Sound, has returned home to Picton looking well after her long holiday.

Mr Arthur Seymour, of Kekeangu, is the guest of Mr and Mrs McLachlan at Kaunoch, Blenheim.

The Misses Morrah are again in Wellington. They took a trip to Dunedin in order to be present at their, brother's marriage to Miss E. Royse.

Mr and Mrs Richmond are now living again in their old home, The Cliffs, Nelson.

Mr John Duncan, The Grove, Picton, is one of the delegates chosen by the Marlborough Land and Railway League to wait upon the Government aud urge upon them the necessity of making the railway from Picton to Canterbury.

Archbishop Redwood arrived in Auckland on Sunday from Wellington.

Mrs Lance, of Horsley Downs, hat been staying in Christchurch with Mrs Alan Scott.

Dr. Charles Vincent, a musician of wide experience, who is also a firstrate composer, is holding the practical musical examination for Trinity College, London, in the Art Gallery, Wellington. Au informal meeting of teachers was held in the gallery one afternoon. The essential tea was duly dispensed at a quarter to five.

Miss Craig, who accompanied Mrs F. N. Robinson to Christchurch, returned to Blenheim last Thursday.

Mr R. Blair, of the Auckland Kauri Timber Company, left Auckland for the South last week.

Mrs (Dr.) Fell, Wellington, and her two little girls are staying with Mrs C. G. Fell, St. John’s, Nelson.

A war identity, Sergt.-Major Bezar, of the H.M. 57th Regiment (the old “Die-hards”), is visiting Auckland. Most people have read Bezar’s “Reminiscences of the 57th Regiment.” The Sergt.-Major comes from the South.

In the list of successful candidates who entered for examination in musical knowledge in connection with Trinity College, London, are many Nelson names, amongst whom are the Misses E. Ledger, Dorothy Bell, E. Bunny, and Joy Ledger.

The Wellington Chess Club has presented the chess champion, Mr R. J. Barnes, with a set of handsome ivory handled carvers as a wedding gift, Mr Barnes having lately entered the holy estate of matrimony.

Mrs Burns has been staying in Wellington with Mrs Rhind and Mrs T. C, Williams, and has been singing at a concert there.

At the C.J.C. Meeting the officers and members of that august club will eutertain His Excellency the Governor aud the Countess of Ranfurly at luncheon. The refreshment is to be served in a special marquee on Cup Day.

Mrs Howie left Nelson on Saturday for Wellington and Gisborne, en route for England, where she hopes to make use of her fine voice and great talent. In spite of the early hour (7.30 a.m.) there were a number of friends on the wharf to wish her God speed and every success in her future career. Mrs Howie will be very greatly missed in Nelson.

Mr Gerald Allen, who went from Picton to South Africa, and joined the Bank of Africa at Kimberley, has received orders to proceed either to Johannesburg or Bloemfontein, on promotion. Mr D. Corrigan came to Nelson from Motueka especially to play his part, ‘Pooh-Bah,’ in the ‘Mikado.’

Miss Mildred Fell and Miss Agatha Dobbie, accompanied by Mr Dobbie, cycled to Blenheim from Pieton last Thursday, where the ladies spent the night with Mrs Carey, returning home the next day.

The Vev. Archdeacon Harper, vicar of St. Mary's, Tiinaru, is to have a year’s holiday. The Rev. J. Whitehead, M.A., of Oxford, lately senior curate at Whitstable, Kent, will perform the clerical duties during his absence. He is to arrive in November. The many friends of the Archdeacon are much pleased that he should have so desirable a rest, though his parishioners are grieved to lose him even for twelve months.

Mrs J. Duncan, of The Grove, Picton, has been spending a few days with her sister. Mrs Howard, in Blenheim, but returned home on Saturday.

Colonel Olcott, the Theosophist, left New Zealand for Sydney last week.

Mrs Airey, Nelson, and her daughter, Mrs Browning, Cable Bay, have gone to Sydney for a trip. Mr M. Airey, of the Cable Staff, who has been spending some weeks in Nelson, has also returned to Sydney.

Mr W. Impett, of St. Paul’s Church, Wanganui, has been presented by the church choir with a beautiful Sevres China clock as a wedding gift. His friends have donated a handsome set of carvers.

Mrs F. Richmond is staying at the Criterion Hotel. Blenheim.
