OBITUARY

MRS HARRIET ANDREW YOUNG, who since the middle of the sixties has resided in Taranaki, died recently at the advanced age of 87 years. Mrs Yonng was born in Yorkshire, and with her husband, the late Mr George Yonng, carried on a drapery business in New Plymouth for many years, retiring from it about 1873. In 1881 Mr George Young died, and his widow has led a very retired lite ever since. The lady was very skilful with her needle, and amongst the work accomplished in her life time was a very large picture in coloured wools on canvas of ‘The Last Supper.* Mrs Young was greatly esteemed in the circle in which she moved for her kindliness of heart, which manifested itself in various forms of social benevolence and church work, the late Mr Young being up till death a churchwarden of St. Mary’s, New Plymouth. Sincere sympathy is felt with Mr A. McCorquodale, Manager of the Northern Roller Mills, Auckland, on account of the death of his fourth son, Mr Alex. McCorquodale, junr., which took place at St. Neots, Stanmore, New South Wales. He was very well-known at Devonport, and was engaged to be married to a yonng lady resident of that suburb. About two years ago he, in conjunction with his brothers, started the Torquil Roller Mills at Sydney, an enterprise which, under their able management, has been very successful. In August, 1896, he had an attack of pleurisy, from which he never rallied. A month ago his illness had reached so serious a stage that his father and mother went over to Sydney. The latter remained with him till his death last week, at the early age of twenty-six. Much regret is naturally felt by all his friends at this untimely end of what promisd to be a most useful and successful life. Very sincere sympathy is expressed in Dunedin by the many friends of the late Miss Helen Cargill, with her relatives, in their bereavement. Miss Helen Cargill was the youngest daughter of Mr C. B. Cargill, of the Cliffs, Dunedin. She was a very valuable member of the Ladies’ Savage Club, who, in consequence of her death, postponed their weekly meeting.
