CHRISTCHURCH.
Dbar Bbb, July 22. Mrs Parsons gave a small, but very enjoyable, afternoon tea for some of her friends at her residence, Papanui Road, on Friday. Among the guests were Mesdames C. W. Hill, C. H. Croxton, Misses Parsons, Kiver, and several more. Mrs W. Stringer gave a small luncheon party one day last week to a few friends, amongst whom were Mesdames Appleby, C. W. Hill, de Bere and Kohn. A rather large party went from Christchurch to be the guests of Mrs Elworthy (Timaru) for the hunt week,
amongst whom were Mrs G. H. Rhodes, Mr and Miss Cowlishaw, Misses Tabart, Palmer, Lee, Wynn-Williams, Mr Perry, and a few others. A ball was included in the festivities, I believe, and a very jolly time altogether spent. On Saturday afternoon Mrs Wilding entertained a party of young friends and a few others at AFTERNOON TBA at New Brighton. Various ways were employed of reaching the rendezvous, some driving, others by tram, the remainder cycling. A walk on the beach only helped to more keenly enjoy the thoughtful preparations of Mrs Wilding, which were partaken of in Hawker’s Hall. On the return journey what might have been a very serious accident happened to Mr F. M. Wallace, one of the cycling party, by two boys recklessly galloping on horseback on a narrow road behind him, each horse actually grazing him in passing, with the result that he fell, his machine being very much smashed, and he, fortunately, escaping with some nasty scratches and bruises. THB ‘ meet ’ was at Yaldhurst on Saturday, when a goodly number rode or drove out, but it was almost too cold to enjoy driving, especially driving towards the hills, which were all thickly covered with a coating of snow. Many returned to town early, and I noticed a good large party making their way to Freeman’s to get thawed with the fragrant cup of tea. On Wednesday, at the kind invitation of Captain Bull, ot the ‘Westralia’ (Messrs Huddart Parker’s new steamer), Mr J. J. Kinsey took a party of lady and gentlemen cyclists ON BOARD TO LUNCH. The party left town and cycled via Sumner to Lyttelton, arriving about r o’clock, and were received by Captain Bull, cycles and visitors being handed on board. The party included Mr J. J. Kinsey (chief consul) and Miss Kinsey, Mr and Mrs C. W. Hill, Mr and Mrs Bickerton Fisher, Miss I. Martin, Miss S. Meares, Mr E. T. Sayers, and Mr Burley, Mr James Embling, and Mrs Morton Anderson. Alter a few minutes’ chat luncheon was announced, the merry party finding their way to the handsome dining saloon, and with the champagne some flowery toasts were honoured. Mr James Embling wishing all success to the ‘ Westralia,’ to which Mr Kinsey replied on behalf of Messrs Huddart Parker, mentioning the pleasant relations now existing between the rival Companies An inspection of the very fine steamer followed, her fittings being real works of art, and after partaking of afternoon tea the cycling party returned to Christchurch by train. Several gioups of the cyclists were photographed on board, some of the party being armed with a camera.
The Ladies’ Musical Club met at Mrs Wilding’s 1 Fownhope,’ Opawa, on Wednesday afternoon, when almost all the members were present, and some visitors. Some very enjoyable music was listened to from Mesdames Wilding, Kitson, Vernon, Westmacott, Ogle, J. R. Scott, Miss Fraser-Tytler, and others. Very pleasant chat and delicious afternoon tea, and lo! the afternoon was gone.
