HUNTING.

(By

Onlooker.)

WITH the Hawke’s Bay hounds at Oruawharu, the residence of Mr Sydney Johnston, there

was a large muster, who well appreciated a capital day’s sport on a recent Wednesday. This is one of the best pieces of hunting ground in the country, consequently the hunting part of the community assembled in full force. Mr and Mrs Sydney Johnston entertained the members of the hunt to luncheon. Among those present were J. B. A’Deane (Deputy Master), H. H. Bridge, Mr and Mrs Harry Carlyon, Mr and Mrs Herbert Russell, Miss Wilson, Miss Nairn, Miss Meta Johnston, Miss Inglis, Mr and Mrs Hobson, Messrs Hugh White F. White, F. and A. Herrick, W. Kinross White, James Worrall, Oswald Johnston, J. Vincent, M. Polson, T. Groome, Davies, and Field. Among those who were driving were Mesdames Kinross White, Johnston, W. R. Russell, Herrick, Worrall, Miss T. Inglis, Captain W. R. Russell, etc.

On Wednesday, June 9th, the hounds met at Three Kings, when the weather was not very pleasant, as it drizzled the whole afternoon, though there was a fair attendance of followers. On the following Saturday the meet was at ‘ The Monument, ’ Otahuhu, and from there to Mr Gray’s farm, a distance of three miles further. The weather was perfect. There was a very large attendance of both spectators and followers of this invigorating and healthy sport. Mr Selby, our huntsman, with his pack of twenty-five well groomed hounds in splendid condition, was at the rendezvous when we arrived ; we then trotted off in full swing for our destination—Mr Gray’s farm. No sooner were the hounds cast in a gully at the back of the dwelling-house, when a hare was started, and away rattled the anxious pack with its enthusiastic followers, but alas! only for a short run of five minutes; a check, and pussie was lost in the surrounding marshy land. Soon after another puss was started, which gave us an excellent run of about half an hour in duration, when some stiff jumps had to be negotiated. Especially stiff were two slip panels, one having a piece of barbed wire fastened across the top, but only those in the first flight negotiated these. Next came a wall into the ploughed land, when Mr Bull manfully stuck to the pigskin, but his steed parted with his company. Another gentleman was thrown head foremost into the symmetrical furrows. There was another nasty slip panel out of this field of plough, which had to be taken up a hill, which made it very difficult to negotiate. About a dozen followers successfully jumped, including three ladies—Mrs W. Bloomfield, Misses McLaughlan, and Kerr-Taylor, Messrs H. Tonks, Wynyard, Carminer, etc. The hounds here succeeded in catching their quarry, and soon made short work of him. The spectators, who were driving, formed a picturesque clump on the hill near Mr Gray’s residence, where a splendid view was obtained. Amongst those present were Mrs (Col.) Dawson and Miss Elliot, Mr and Mrs Lyons, Misses Percival (two) and friend ; Mrs Gorrie and family ; Mr and Miss Wynyard; Mrs McLaughlin and Miss Minitt; Mr and Mrs Gilmore, Miss F. Sellers and Mr Bain. Mrs Greenway and Mrs Markham, etc. Riding were Mrs W. Bloomfield (Blue Peter Miss McLaughlin (Cattian, whom we are glad to see has recovered from his little escapade), Miss Dunnett (on her new jumping grey), Miss Edith Percival (Tommy), Miss Kerr-Taylor (Nimrod), Miss Roberts (Molly Hawke), Miss Corn. Taylor (Tim), Miss Tribley (Dainty), Mrs Selby, Messrs Henderson, Tanner, Gorrie (two), Dunwoodie, Bull (two). Colonel Dawson (our master) was mounted on Ike. Mr Carminer (Ingorina), Mr H. Tonks (Billy), Mr Gorrie (Jimmy), Mr McLaughlin (Betty), Mr W. McLaughlin (Psyche), Mr Harrison (Robin Adair), Mr Dawson (Kauri), Mr J. Philips (Oceolo), Mr H. Wynyard (Patterson), Mr E. Ellett (Arctic), Mr Varnum (Awatuna), Mr Dunwoodie (Havelock), Mr Skipwith (Dad), Mr Eliott (Saxon), Messrs Pollock. Feilding, Burns, O’Dowd, Cotter, Gordon (two), Bloomfield, etc.

The Pakuranga hounds met last Saturday at St. John’s College, where the muster of equestrians was large, though the sport was not very brilliant, as the hares were scarce. We managed to have two or three short runs, which were remarkable for their slowness. Amongst those present were Mrs W. Bloomfield, Misses Dunnett. McLaughlin, Kerr Taylor, Percival, Roberts, Bull (two), Henderson, Sellers, Corn. Taylor, Gorrie(two);. Colonel Dawson, Messrs Holgate, McLaughlin, Feilding, Carminer, Burns, Harrison, Philips, Kinlock, Bloomfield, Tonks, Wynyard, Noakes, Elliot, Gorrie, Cotter, Wells (from H.M S.),Gordon (two),Skipwith, Varnum, O’Dowd, Pollock, Dunnett, Kenderdine, Colson, were the gentlemen. Williamson and

Miss Rees (Gisborne); Mr J. Smith and daughter ; Missea Torrens and Thompson, etc. The Hawke’s Bay Hounds met last Saturday opposite the Band Rotnnda on the Marine Parade, Napier, prior to a hnnt at Petane. The hounds were in charge of Mr H. H. Jackson. When the hunting party arrived at Petane they were invited to lunch by Mr Kinross White, who informed Mr J. L. Sunderland, the master, that hares were to be found on his plantation, which was afterwards proved to be the case. Some of those present were J. L. Sunderland (master) on Waratea, T. H.
