PICTON.

Dear Bee, May 18. During her stay in Picton Mrs Conolly has spent a good time, being invited to dinner at Mrs Speed’s, Mrs Rutherford’s, and Mrs Andrews’, and to afternoon tea at Mrs Scott’s. As Mrs Conolly was unable to go out of an evening, other festivities fell through. Mrs Linton’s school girls arranged A SURPRISE PARTY to Mrs Millington in Wellington-street for Wednesday. Many of the girls were away spending their holidays with friends, but those who went enjoyed their evening immensely, Dr. and Mrs Millington allowing them the run of the house Among the girls were the Misses Fell, Linton (two), Seely (two), Greensill (two), Philpotts, and Wilson. THE READING SOCIETY met on Friday evening in the Institute, and read the first act of ‘ Julius Caesar, ’ Mr Howard explaining obsolete words and phrases in a very entertaining manner. The different parts were taken as follows :—Miss Hay, Brutus; Mrs Allen, Cassius; Miss R. Williams, Julius Caesar; Mrs Seely, Cinna ; Miss Howard, Flavius ; Miss Williams, Portia ; Mr Howard, Anthony ; and the Rev. C. Jennings, Marrullus. Others present were Mrs Speed, Mrs and Miss Philpotts, Misses Allen (three), Greensill, Millington. Jackson, etc., etc. Three afternoons this week have been devoted to assisting Mrs Western in making up new household and table linen in place of that burnt in the late fire. The ‘ bees ’ were held at Mrs Philpott’s residence, and Mrs Western’s friends met there and worked heartily together to repair damages. Mrs Phiipotts provided afternoon tea, and all present agreed that it was a pleasaut way of making a trousseau. Miss Nora Allen did all the marking, so that everything was finished off at once. Other ‘ bees ’ have been held on the Picton Road by neighbours of the Westerns, and indeed everything has been done to show how highly the family are esteemed in the district. On Monday evening Miss Lilly Greensill gave A PARTY at her mother’s residence in Buller-street to her young friends, among whom were Misses Rutherford (two), Fell, Linton (two), Seely (two), Philpotts, etc., etc., and Masters Stow, Scott, Fell, etc.
