Dear Bee. March 9. Picton people could hardly believe their eyes when they got up on Thursday morning to find the direct steamer ‘ Maori' quietly moored at the wharf. After that no one can say anything about the depth of water close up to our town. The vessel had been brought up by Captain Wheeler as pilot, an 1 was open for inspection all day. Many people went on board to view the huge structure, which, one gentleman observed, must have been made by the mile, with a stem and a stern stuck on. and there she was. All the town must have been cn the wharf during the afternoon, for the ‘ Takapuna ‘ came in and several of our girls -cere going away, and hosts of friends came down to say good-bye. Some of the frocks at Miss Greensill’s AFTERSOOS TEA on Wednesday were:—Miss Greensill, in dark skirt, cream blouse; Miss Ethel Greensill, fawn skirt, white muslin blouse; Mrs H. C. Sevmour, black crepon with silk, black hat with shaded silk bows and poppies ; Mrs Allen, black figured alpaca with silk front to bodice, black bonnet with pink ; Mrs J. Greensill,, black ; Mrs C. Western, dark skirt, pink blouse, picture hat with ostrich feathers; Miss Western, black skirt, with plaid ribbon sash, white blouse: Mrs H. Beauchamp, naw skirt, yellow pongee blouse, sailor hat ; Miss Allen, black serge skirt, pink cambric blouse, gem hat with black velvet ; Miss Nora Allen, red cashmere costume, sailor hat ; Miss Isabel Seymour, navy skirt, spotted muslin blouse, sailor hat ; Miss White, dark costume, sailor hat ; Miss Nellie Allen, navy blue costume, hat en nite ; Miss Ethel Seymour, white nainsook frock, white sailor hat ; Miss Flo Western, navy skirt, white blouse, sailor hat; Miss May Western, navy blue cloth costume, white vest, collars, and cuffs, and white gem hat; Miss Eve Western, navy skirt, white blouse; Mrs Haslett (Auckland). black.
