Deaf. Bee, January 19. On Thursday afternoon Mr and Mrs R. Dawson gave a garden party to the employees of the firm of Messrs J. Ballantyne and Co. Mr Dawson was formerly a partner in the firm, and he never forgets those with whom he has Seen associated. Special trams were provided to convey the numerous guests out to Mr Dawson s spacious grounds, where all kinds of games were played—tennis, croquet, bowls, quoits, etc Tea and other refreshments were most sumptuously provided on the lawns under the trees. Mr and Mrs Dawson doing all in their power to make their visitors enjoy themselves. Mrs Dr. Jennings gave a large afternoon tea on Thursday at her residence. ' O'Takaro.’ Gloucester--treet. where a very pleasant afternoon was spent. Tea was laid in the dtning-room. which was prettily decorated with poppies and other wild flowers and grasses. Miss Milly Heywood Auckland) is at present the guest
of Mrs Jennings, and was very helpful in looking after the many guests. Mrs Jennings wore a verv prettv shot purple and green gown, and makes an ideal hostess. Among those present were Mrs G. Roberts < Auckland . in black skirt, with vieux rose bodice covered with chiffon ; Mrs W D. Meares, black gown with yellow chiffon sleeves : Mrs G. Kettlewell. black crepon skirt, and handsome black and blue brocade bodice, large hat trimmed to match and black plumes ; Mrs W. F. Ward Wellington . white spotted mus'in over vellow trimmed with yellow lace, pretty flower-trimmed hat; Mrs Way; Misses Lean two', mourning costumes : Misses Randall. L. Heywood, and a great many others. THE VICE-REGO. PARTY. His Excellency, the Governor. Lady Glasgow and party arrived in Lyttelton on Monday in the Govern ment steamer ‘ Tutanekai ‘ from Dunedin, via Akaroa. Lord and Lady Glasgow, the Ladies Augusta and Dorothv Boyle, and three younger brothers are the guests of Mr and Mrs A. E. G. Rhodes. *Te Koraha.' Merivale, during their stav in Christchurch. Lady Alice Bovle remained behind in Dunedin for a few days, but has since joined them there. Every one regrets that we are to lose the Earl and Countess of Glasgow, and there is some disappointment there will te no festivities of anv kind when society at large might have taken leave of them. Lady Glasgow s health quite putting anv such duty on one side. It is with sincere pleasure one hears how greatly the Sounds trip has benefited Lady Glasgow in every way.
