Mr C. V. Houghton is in New Plymouth. He will return to Auckland shortly.

The two Jndges of the Native Lands’ Court—Messrs Edger and Johnson—have arrived in Auckland from Gisborne, their duties in connection with the Native Land Appelate Court at Port Awanui being at length completed.

J. A. H. Marcier, of Christchurch, has been appointed Examiner of Masters and Mates in the colony.

The Rev. J. M. Mitchell has been inducted to the Hamilton Presbyterian Church by the Rev. R. Sommerville (Moderator), assisted by the Revs. Ferguson and Scott-West.

Mr Ross, who has been in temporary charge of the Hamilton Presbyterian Church, was farewelled at a social last week. High compliments were rendered to him for his efficient work for the last eight months

Mr A. Boardman is the new Mayor of Auckland. He thoroughly understands his business.

Colonel Pole Penton will inspect the fortifications of Auckland when he arrives in that city.

The residence of Mr Allsworth, editor of the Egmont Settler, was in some danger from bush fires last week. Fortunately, heavy rain fell and put out the fires.

Several Auckland ladies, viz , Mrs Street, Mrs Gillies, Miss Gillies and Miss Rookes, of ‘ Birtley,’ Parnell, have gone down South to spend their Christmas holidays.

Mr W. Percival, Secretary of the Auckland Racing Club, had an unfortunate accident last week. His horse slipped as he was driving down Wellesley-street East, and Mr Percival was shot out of the buggy on to the hard road. Mr Percival was conveyed to the hospital, where it was ascertained that he has suffered internal injuries to his head. His place will be taken pro tern by Mr R. W. Wynyard, the popular secretary of the Takapuna Jockey Club, who is fully conversant with all matters appertaining to the management of a race meeting.

Mr E. Rutherford (Picton) has gone to Canterbury for the shearing season. Picton people always miss his genial face during his periodical visits to his runs, and are always ready to welcome him back.

Mr, Mrs, and the Misses Dymock (Napier) contemplate a trip Home to England the beginning of the year.

Mr Horace Darwin, a son of the late Charles Darwin, has consented to take the office of Mayor of Cambridge.

Mr S. Clarke Johnson, Auckland, Manager of the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, leaves for Wellington at the beginning of February to assume the duties of Inspector of the Company.

A LARGE garden party was held on the Convent Grounds. Coromandel, on Monday, December 14th, in honour of Bishop Lenihan. There was a representative gathering, and the weather being favourable, the event was a great success.

The Most Reverend the Primate (Dr. Cowie) preached in St. Paul's Church, Auckland, on Sunday night. This was bis final sermon in the diocese prior to his departure for England, where he goes to attend the Lambeth Conference.

Miss Ida Locking (Napier) is staying with Mrs Harris Bronte-street. Nelson.

Miss F. Campbell. Nelson, has gone to Timaru to be present at her brother’s marriage to Miss Guinness, which is to take place about Christmas time.

Mrs Richmond Hursthouse is spending a few days in Nelson.

Miss Conolly (Auckland), who is visiting her Picton friends just now, is staying with Mrs F. Andrews.

Miss May Preshaw has returned to her home in Nelson after a long visit to the South.

Miss Blackiston (Christchurch) is the guest of Mrs Mules, ‘ Bishopdale,’ Nelson.

Major-General Schaw and Messrs S. Percy Smith and J. McKerrow have been elected Governors of the New Zealand Institute to represent the incorporated societies for the ensuing year.

Mr Symes, the newly-elected member for Egmont, entertained a number of ladies and gentlemen at dinner after the election.

Miss Edith Turner (Ravenscliffe), Queen Charlotte Sound, has gone to visit Mrs Chaytor at Marshlands.

Molls. Anoinette Trebelli and Mr Prouse went down to the Thames last week. The diva returned on Saturday morning, looking very bonnie after her trip, and in good fettle for her work in Christmas week.

The Rev. E. P. Cachemaille. formerly of Nelson, but later of Dunedin, has returned to Nelson, and will take charge of the Anglican Church at Wakapuaka until the Bishop appoints a permanent successor to the Rev. J. de B Gal wey. The latter goes to Wellington to the charge of the Newtown parish. Mrs Cachemaille and all the family excepting one son have gone Home to England.

Mrs Herbert Godfrey has let her house furnished to Mr Menteith (Wellington), who is bringing his family to Picton for the holidays. Mrs Godfrey and family intend spending the holidays with relations at Oknkuri.

Miss BaTGER (Auckland) is staying with Miss Kinsey (Christchurch) for a few days.

Master Wyatt, the calculating boy, Georgia Magnet, the immovable lady, and the boy comedian are announced to appear in New Plymouth on December 22nd and 23rd.

The Misses Hitchings propose leaving Napier in January for a trip Home to England, expecting to be absent two years.

Miss (A.P.) Seymour (Picton) has gone to Nelson for three months visiting friends.

Mr Fraser, of the Bank of New Zealand branch in New Plymouth, who has been transferred to Lyttelton, was entertained by a number of business people at the Criterion Hotel previous to his departure from the place.

An awkward accident happened to Mr Fred Cole, manager of Mr Arundell’s estate at Morrinsville, last week. He was kicked on the body by a mare so severely as to break several ribs. Dr. Brewis was at once sent for and attended to the injuries, and Mr Cole is now progressing favourably

The Hon. A. J. Cadman intends returning to Auckland before the Christmas holidays are over.

Libut.-Colonel Porter is suffering from the effects of a slight accident sustained whilst riding a short time ago. TJie bough of a tree struck him on the eye, which has become considerably inflamed, and has given acute pain.

Mr A. B. Worthington’s name is being obliterated in Christchurch. The present proprietors of the building lately known as the Temple of Truth, Christchurch, have altered the name to * The Temple,’ and are also destroying all the mementoes of Mr A. R. Worthington, with which the structure was adorned.

Archdeacon Palmer, of the Melanesian Mission, arrived in Auckland last week from Norfolk Island by the • Southern Cross.’

Mr Mlir, late chief engineer of the s.s. ‘ Hawke’s Bay,* is now in charge of the engineering department of the National Skating Rink. West End, London. Mr C. J. McCarthy, who served his apprenticeship in Napier, is second engineer of the establishment, the patrons of which skate on real ice.

Mr R. C. Reid, of the Westport News, is dangerously ill. Paralysis has affected his organs of speech.

Herr Schmitt, conductor of the Auckland Choral Society, received a pretty little acknowledgment of his services on Tuesday evening last in the Choral Hall. During the interval of the Choral Society’s concert, Mr J. J. Worrall, on behalf of a number of members of the Auckland Choral Society, presented him with a purse of sovereigns as a Christmas present, and out of respect and esteem for him. Mrs Page represented the ladies.

The Blenheim friends of Mrs Arthur Symons, Kekerangu, were startled to bear of her sudden attack of illness last Thursday. It was caused by hemorrhage from the lungs. By the latest news received last (Monday) night Mrs Symons is rather better.

Mr Younger has, it is stated, resigned the office of Town Clerk of Picton, which he has held for some 15 years past.

The Blenheim police force has been very unfortunate lately. First Sergeant Moller’s serious illness, and then news was received of the death of Constable Stewart at the Hospital of blood poisoning.

Captain BendalL, Lloyds surveyor and also surveyor to the United Underwriters’ Association, has just successfully passed the examination which entitles him to receive a license as an adjuster of compasses. Captain Allman conducted the examination.

IT was with unaffected regret that the news of the committal of Sergeant Moller, of the Blenheim police, to the Wellington Asylum, was heard. He had been in bad health for some time, which appeared to prey on his mind. He is very highly respected here, and though illdoers will not welcome his return to his post, for he is unflinching in carrying out his duty, the respectable part of tbe community will.

Mr E. H. Bold, Inspector of Telegraphs, and Mr Volat have been on a visit of inspection to theOhinemuri district.

Captain M. Reston, formerly of the New Zealand Company’s barque * Waimea,’ is at present on a visit to his relatives in Auckland.

Mr and Mrs J. W. Don, from Melbourne, are at present staying at the Star Hotel, Auckland. They intend touring New Zealand, returning to Victoria via Tasmania.
