AUCKLAND.

Dbar Bee, November 30. Before I begin my notes on the one great event of the week I must tell you about a return to the LADIES’ LEAP YEAR SOCIAL which was held in Mrs Sowerby’s Hall some time ago. The return took place on Monday in the shape of a moonlight picnic to bt. Helier’s by water. The Ferry Company’s P.S. ‘ Britannia ’ left the wharf shortly after 8 pm. The Artillery Band was in attendance. and played a nice selection of music during the evening. Fireworks were let off on the trip down for the benefit of the younger portion of those on board. On arriving at St Helier’s, mine host at the hotel had a splendid supper laid out in his best style, while the room was handsomely decorated with flowers for the occasion. After partaking of refreshments, dancing, games and singing were indulged in by both young and old. All having enjoyed themselves, a start was made for home, the band playing all the way pretty music, which was much admired. The Committee are to be congratulated upon their arrangements, which showed that they had given them every attention. It is hoped when anything of this nature is to be gone into they will again be to the fore. The Auckland COLLEGE AND GRAMMAR SCHOOL SPORTS took place last Tuesday in the Domain, where there was a very large attendance. Great credit is due to the hon. sec . Mr J. H, Turner, and the other officials who were in charge for the praiseworthy manner they carried out the lengthy programme, commencing at half-past ten in the morning. Afternoon tea was provided by the girls in a little marquee erected for the occasion. Miss Binks received the guests at the water’s edge, after which they wended their way to the house, where delicious afternoon tea and luscious strawberries and cream were enjoyably partaken of. After some music, contributed by Miss Griffiths, the visitors dispersed to different parts of the lovely grounds, some a-fern collecting, while others gathered large bunches of Marguerite daisies from the fields, which were carpeted with these modest wild flowers. About half-past six we bade adieu to ou r charming hostesses, after a delightfully spent afternoon. On St. Andrews’ Day last week a very successful PICNIC was got up by some of the energetic people in Mount Albert to the Hunua Falls, a distance of twenty-four miles from Auckland. Three brakes, cushioned and hooded, belonging to Mr Tanner. Onehunga, were engaged. On reaching his stables to change horses to continue the journey, it was found more conveyances were needed, as the party had increased to seventy or eighty in number, quite a number coming from Grafton Road. Mr Tanner with great promptitude put on two waggonettes with pairs of horses. Unfortunately the rain descended e’er reaching Papakura, where shelter was sought in the hall. Luncheon, dancing, and general noise enlivened the party until the rain ceased. The horses were again harnessed and a move was made for the falls, passing the Papakura Cemetery, along the Hunua Road, until the Hunua Ranges were reached. Leaving here the conveyances. we turned into a ti-tree track of about two hundred yards and descended down to the falls, which were very pretty, the party adding a great deal to their beauty by their picturesque positions amongst the trees, ferns and stones. Ferns, etc., were gathered, hats decorated, then a start w r as made for the Papakura hall, where a high tea was partaken of with much mirth-provok-ing qualities. Then a scramble for seats in the brakes, as all were homeward bound, and packed like sardines, for half a dozen others had joined the party, having come out by the morning’s train. You can well imagine the amusement that was created with songs, riddles, etc. By eleven o’clock the whole party had reached their various homes. Now for those present:—Mesdames Williamson, Tanner, Kerr-Taylor. Gilmore. Wilks. Misses Wright. Clapcott, Martin. Chambers-Taylor (two), Cecil-Taylor, Kerr-Taylor (two). Dawson (two). Miller (two).
