Lightning was formerly one of the greatest enigmas among natural phenomena. To day we know that the average electromotive force of a * bolt ’ of lightning is about 3,500,000 volts ; that the current is 14,000,000 amperes, and that the time of discharge is about one twenty thousandth of a second ! In snch a ‘ bolt ’ there is energy equal to 2,450,000 volts, or 284.482 horse-power.
