There is a rich budget of reading in the Pall Mall Magazine for October. An interesting article, the first of a series of three, entitled ‘ Hatches, Matches, Despatches,’ serves up some interesting statistics about birth and babies. The diagrams and illustrations are of an original character. A sensational love tale, ‘ The Story of Karl Ott,’ occupies a part of the magazine, while the other complete stories are ’ An Unrecorded Trial,’ ' Janet’s Nemesis,’ and ‘ New and Liberal Terms.’ Sir Walter Besant’s novel, * A City of Refuge, reaches its seventeenth chapter in this issue, and grows in interest. Among the articles are the continuation of ‘ Marat : The Friend of the People,’ a descriptive account of Exmoor ponies, • Old Memories,’ 1 The Evolution of H M.S. “Britannia.” ’ There is the usual scattering of poems, and the volume, which concludes with Mr Zangwill’s exceedingly readable * Without Prejudice,’ is profusely illustrated.
