DUNEDIN.

Dear Bee, October 8. I forgot to mention in my last letter that Mrs Lindo Ferguson had a CHILDREN S OPERA in St- Matthew s School last Friday evening. There were between forty and fifty children in the opera, which passed off in a most/ successful manner. A number of ladies and gentlemen were invited to be present, but no striking dresses were worn. The stage was very prettily decorated, and much credit is due to Miss Browning and Miss Gertrude Rattray, who, I believe, trained the children. On Tuesday afternoon Mrs Sargood had a SMALL AFTERNOON TEA, Very few were present, namely. Mrs James, Mrs Thomas MacLean. Misses Shand. Neill, MacKerras. MacLean..Kempthorne, Ulrich. E. Neill. G Webster. L. Shand, etc. During the afternoon many pretty ;-ongs were sung, so that with work and talk the afternoon was very quickly whiled away. On Thursday Mrs Williams (Anderson’s Bay) gave a SMALL LUNCH for Mrs James Mills, who has just lately returned from England. The table was prettily arranged with spring flowers- Those present were Mnsdames Williams. Mills. Gallaway, Heaton. Rhodes (Christchurch), Ferguson. Misses Mills, Williams, and M. Williams. etc. On Friday Miss Ruby Neill, I mon-street, gave a girl’s afternoon tea. Amongst the guests were Miss Macassev. in black cloth jacket and -ikirL white sailor hat ; Mi-s Michaels, blue serge costume, stylish black hat with green velvet trimmings; Miss Bartleman, olive green serge, black sailor hat , Miss S. Bartieman. navy blue serge jacket and skirt: Miss Ulrich, black, sleeveless bodice of strip’d gray silk, white hat: Mias E. Neill blue serge, large blacK hat with flowers; Miss G. Webster, black serge, heliotrope vest white hat; Miss Mackerras, black velvet bodice. lan?* black hat with pink ro-es; Miss L. Roberts, blue serge, small yellow hat with yellow buttercups; Mias M Sise. blue serge, black sai.or hat ; Mias F. Mac Lean. stylish shot green silk, green straw hat with black velvet trimmings. A FANCY DRESS BALL was given in St. John’s Schoolroom. Roslyn, on Fi iday. October 9th. as a wind up to Mias Reynolds’ dancing class About a hundred and twenty guests were present. The floor was in .perfect order for dancing. I noticed Miss B. Mac Loan as Little Miss Mof fett in very pretty white muslin dress with blue sash ; she w ®re her hair down. Urge hat with poppies and daisies; Mias M. Butterworth becoming Empire costume, with long watteau train: Mias C. Graham looked extremely well as a Gipsy; Miss J. Brent went as a Biby. which looked quaint; Misses N. and R Farquhar, powder and patches; Mi s r. Dennison also wore powder and patches; Miss R. Reynold-, b’.u* satin evening drees ; Mi-s 8. Bartieman looked quite the character as a German Pea-ant; Mias M. Clapco t. Greek Girl: Miss M Haggitt and Df. Read Buttercup’ - simple dresses of yellow muslin trimmed with buttercups; Mi-s A. Nichoson. Primrose: Miss D. Barron, Erin; Miss M. Blse looked very sweet as Dresden China ; Miss L John son. Daffodil; Miss A. Greenwood, evening dress of white satin
