WANGANUI.

Bee, July 26 The chief item in my letter will be an account of the CAVALRY BALL which took place on Friday last. It is looked upon as the dance of the season. As may be supposed, the attendance was very large there being quite 300 present, if anything, gentlemen predominate ing. The hall was beautifully decorated. A number of large mirrors were prettily draped, nikau palm leaves and cabbage and fern trees were artistically arranged round the building, the band rotunda being particularly attractive. Devices on the walls, made with carbines and crossed swords, and beautiful pot plants distributed here and there, all combined to make the hall attractive. The supper which was a substantial one of chicken, ham. oysters, soup, jellies, creams, delicious trifles, and dainty cakes, etc. was provided by Mr Dustin. Among the local visiting officers were Captain Clanham (Naval Artillery). Captain Watt and Lieutenant Hughes (Wanganui Riflesi, Quartermaster Thain.
