Hear Bkk, July 31. THE ANNUAL BALL given by the Star Beating Club took place last Friday night in Thomas Hall, and was altogether a successful one. There were about three hundred people present. The decorations deserve special mention, as they were really a work of art. The committee worked with a will to make the ball a success, and I am sure they must have been satisfied with the result. On the walls were hung different photographs belonging to the Club, while oars were placed in fan shapes at intervals, and bunting, nikau palms, and wattle were also effectually used. A doub.e sculler hung from the centre of the ceiling. The stage was. as usual. made comfortable with easy chairs, etc- I must not forget to mention the splendid champagne sit-down supper that was laid out upstairs. I am told that it was all cooked by one cook. who. if such was the case, certainly excelled herself on this occasion. Minifies' band supplied the music. Shortly after nine o clock Lord and Lady Glasgow arrived, accompanied by the Ladies Augusta and Alice Boyle. Major Eliott. Captain Preston, and Captain Feilden. Mr Field, captain of the Club, and Mrs Field received at the entrance of the ballroom. In the Viceregal set of Lancers Hi* Excellency danced with Mrs Field and Lady Glasgow with Mr Field. Martin, and many others. ‘OUR BOY’S* was performed at Government House last Wednesday and Thursday nights. The large ballroom was packed the first night, many people having to stand. The performance on the whole was good. From this observation you will see that it might have been belter, but I think, and many think the same, chat the daily papers critici ed the performers altogether too severely, for there is no doubt that they each did their very best. Miss K. Wilford as Belinda, the lodging-house slave, and Dr. Purdy as the butterman were really splendid: indeed. I doubt whether either could be improved upon. Miss Grace took the part of Violet Melrose, an heiress, the part of Mary, her poor cousin, being taken by Miss L. Wilford. who was particularly good in her love scene with Talbot Champneys (Mr H. But’eri. The part of Sir Geoffrey Champneys suited Mr E. Hadfield all to pieces, and some of his acting was very good indeed. Mr H. Rolleston represented the butterman s son, Charlie Middlewick, and after he had got over his apparent nervousness in the first Act. he also was very good. Mrs Purdy took the part of Aunt Clarissa. In the first act Miss Grace wears a pretty summer costume.
