CHRISTCHURCH.

Dear Bee, May 7. A very pleasant afternoon was spent by a great crowd of ladies on Thursday afternoon at the Y.M.C.A. Room* on the occasion of the first CONCERT of this season given by the Christchurch Liederkranzchen. An adjournment was made, as usual during the interval, to the room downstairs where afternoon tea w-as dispensed to the m.»ny visitors. amongst whom were Mrs and the Misses Julius, Mrs Mathias, Mrs Graham. Mesdames A Anderson, Bruce, Appleby, W. Stringer. Townend. Trent. Walcot Wood, Godfrey. Little, J. Aiken. Jennings, Mallion, the Misses Hargreaves, Heywood, Hicks, Townend. Berkeley, Cholmondeley, Webb. etc. A dainty LITTLE LUNCHEON PARTY was given by Mrs Harry Meares. Fendalton, on Thursday, at w’hich I hear the arrangements w r ere simply charming. Mrs Meares wore an elegant white gown w’ith pale blue velvet collar and cuffs with lace ruffles; Mrs Feriday. Misses Macpherson, Mrs and Miss Helmore. Mrs and Miss .Meeson, Mrs Neave, and Mrs and Miss Devenish Meares were among the guests. On Tuesday afternoon Mrs Em bling. Opawa, gave a very pleasant LADIES MUSICALK for her Melbourne visitors. Mrs Embling wore a pretty black striped silk crepon with soft pink chiffon flehu at throat ; Mrs Cameron, an elegant grey green alpaca with passementerie of the same shade : Miss Embling. a figured green and pink costume w’ith cream lace; Miss Phillips, a neat myrtle cloth with velvet of the same shade; Among the other guests were Mrs Wilding in grey tweed, and a stylish brown velvet toque with wings; Mrs Reid (Heathcote), looking well in covert coating skirt and coat with brown revers, tan and brown sailor hat and pink quills ; Mrs Arthur Oilivier. in grey crepon with silk vest and black hat; Mrs W. Watkins. Aynsley and many others. Refreshments were served in the dining room, where tea, coffee, cakes, sweets, grapes, etc . were discussed to a very merry accompaniment of chatter. Some very excellent music was listened to throughout the afternoon, and the rooms looked very bright and pretty with a wealth of choice chrysantheand ferns in vases. In the evening Miss Palmer, ‘ Woodford.’ gave a girls’ euchre party, which was a very pretty gathering. On the supper table were the new high decorations, and they were very choice. Among the guests were Misses Gould, Ned will. Lee. and Cowlishaw. On Thursday Mrs I. Gibbs, Merivale, gave what might be almost termed an impromptu euchre party as most of the invitations were issued through the telephone, and it was in honour of a party from the s.s. ‘ Kaikoura,’ beginning with a handful of friends and mounting up to seven or eight tables. Dr. and Mrs Jennings, and Mr and Mrs Manncring were. I believe, the only married ones present. The Misses Cunning ham, Graham. Thomas, Kinsey. Anderson. Messrs Corbett. Nelson Day, and Wood were only some of those present who spent a delightful evening, as Mr and Mrs Gibbs’ guests always do. Mrs Peacock gave a little dance on Friday evening, which was a very enjoyable time, and given in honour of Miss Samms (Victoria), who is her guest for a short stay. On Saturday Dr. Graham Campbell gave a small but very agreeable dinner party. Mr and Mrs Burns. Dr. and Mrs Deamer, Mr and Mrs Henry Cotterill. and Dr. Fox were among his guests. Mrs Izard gave a large juvenile dance in the Canterbury boat sheds, which lend themselves so admirably for an occasion of the kind. The various rooms were most artistically decorated. The large one upstairs was used for dancing. and supper was laid below. Mrs Izard wore black and blue:

Miss Mary Izard, rose-coloured gauze over white slip: Miss Gladys Wilding, in a cream and green velvet : Miss Gladys Anderson. in heliotrope ; Misses Juliu*. Williams. Cook. Ruoseli. and Hill were some of the guests. IN»li y Vai k
