HUNTING.

BY

ONLOOKER.

rMHE Pakuranga hounds met last Wednesday at East J Tamaki, about sixteen miles from Auckland. There were only about eight hunters who ventured so far. Amongst them I noticed Lady Augusta Boyle, Captain Feilden, the Misses Dunnett, Bull, etc. Heavyrain fell in the afternoon, which soaked these enthusiastic riders before they had reached their homes. Last Saturday the meet was at Panmure Bridge, and a very large crowd of spectators was present. Barbed wire prevented the riders from following closely, though there were plenty of hares, and the houndshad excellent sport. There were numerous falls, but really I cannot remember the names of the unfortunate ones. Miss Percival distinguished herself by taking agate ; she was following our huntsmen. Amongst those present were His Excellency the Earl of Glasgow, Countess of Glasgow, Lady Helen Boyle, and the Hon. Allan Boyle, Lady Dorothy Boyle was holding the ribbons of Lady Augusta’s mettlesome pair in the phaeton ; she was accompanied by her youngest brother. Lady Augusta was riding the chestnut; Lady Alice Boyle, Fly. They were attended by Capt. Preston and Capt. Fielden, both, of course, mounted. Amongst others riding I noticed Col. Dawson (the Master), Mrs W. Bloomfield, the Misses Dunnett, Tribley, Percival, Gorrie (two). Sellers, Tanner, Cargo, Bush, Buckland, Bull, Dunwoodie (two), Ware, Kerr-Taylor, Roberts, Bailey, Mrs Tonks, Mrs Gilmore, Messrs Mill, Wallace, Gilmore, Bell, Gorrie, Gordon, Varnum, Harrison, Ireland, Upton, Tonks, Caminer, Philips, Shera, McLaughlin, Cousins, Fenwicke, Colson, Tonks, etc. Driving were Mrs Morrin, Mrs (Col.) Dawson, Mr and Mrs Cburton, Mrs Arthur Taylor, Mrs and Miss Ireland, Miss Hesketh, Mr and Mrs E. Russell, Mr Jack Selby and his sister, etc. The opening meet of the hunting season in Auckland takes place on Saturday at the residence of the Master of the Pakuranga hounds, Colonel Dawson, ‘ Arborfield,’ Ellerslie. Mrs Dawson will provide luncheon with her usual well-known hunting hospitality. Hunting is gaining in favour in Christchurch so far, and there has been quite a revival of the old fashioned sport. Last Saturday the meet was at Fendalton at Mr H. Cotterill’s. Mr and Mrs Cotterill entertained the ladies and members at a sumptuous hunting breakfast, when just prior to starting for the chase after the call to mount, the whole party were photographed, making a striking picture. Amongst those riding were Mrs A. E. G. Rhodes, Misses Nedwill (two), Gerard, Helmore, Bassett,Messrs H. Cotterill, G. Murray-Aynsley, A. E. G. Rhodes, Bassett, Lascelles, Cowlishaw, Turrell (two), Neave (two), Hamer, J. D. Hall, Palairet, P. Campbell, Haydon (two), G. Gould, Holmes, Patterson, Stewart, Williams, etc.

The Ashburton hounds met for the second time this season at Winslow on Saturday, the 2nd inst. Some splendid sport was enjoyed, the jumping being exceptionally good. Amongst those following were Messrs C. Wynn-Williams (master), Lester Moore, D. Millar, Rasper, B. Wynn-Williams, Percy Jones, E. Roberts, R. Upton, C. Wroughton, E. Price, Ranger, Rennie, Kellar and Dolman.

The Brackenfield hounds had their first meet of the season on the same day at the Amberley racecourse. There was a fine run, the hounds being in fine fettle. Mr and Mrs Courage provided the luncheon for the party, which was about 30strong. Among those present were The Master, Mr Starky, on Twilight, Messrs Tavistock, H. McCallum, Cocks, Elliot Lane, Courage, Olliver, J. Dampier-Crossley, and R J Parsons.
