NELSON.

Dear Bee, October 23. Last Saturday the young people had a very enjoyable evening, when Miss E. Bunny entertained her friends at PROGRESSIVH EUCHRE, and they all had a very merry time, which passed all too quickly. After the prizes had been awarded, and a dainty supper partaken of, a few dances brought a pleasant evening to a close The prizes were won by Miss J. Broad and Master E. Moore, and the boobies were Miss M. Mackay and Master C. Levien. Mrs Bunny received the guests, among whom were Misses M. Rowley, M. Blackett,. M. Houlker. M. Mackay. J. Tomlinson, Z. Broad, K. Hubbard, F. Edwards, D. Catley, Masters Moore (two), O’Beirne, Levien. Broad (two), Armstrong, Robinson, Tomlinson (two). On Monday evening a most interesting LECTURE ON JAPAN was delivered in the Provincial Hall by the Rev. F. W. Chatterton. The chair was taken by Mr J. Bly th, who has lately returned from Japan, where he had been travelling with Mr Chatterton. It is a great pity more people did not avail themselves of this opportunity of learning a little about a country which has been brought into such prominence lately. The lecturer had the help of limelight views to more fully explain his subject, which was a roost entertaining one. HERE AND THERE. An old Nelson boy, Mr J. H. Rochfort, is again on New Zealand shores. He has been apppointed as mate of the Anchor Company’s steamer Aorere, after some years training in the New Zealand Shipping Company’s boats. Misses Moss (Greymouth) and Johnson (Wellington) passed through Nelson on Thursday on their way to Greymouth after a two months’ trip to Sydney, which they have immensely enjoyed. Miss Lebecki returned from Auckland last week, and is staying with her sister, Mrs Pogson. We are all glad to hear Mrs Leyien is progressing well after the serious accident she met with last week.
