THE NEW ZEALAND MEDICAL CONGRESS.

THE New Zealand Medical Congress, some prominent members of which we give in our illustrations, met recently in Christchurch. All the branches of the New Zealand Medical Association were represented with the exception of Auckland. The meeting was one of the most important yet held, for in addition to ordinary business several great questions were gone into and some new features added. The Medical Benevolent, and Medical Defence Funds suggested by Dr. Irving, of Christchurch were successfully inaugurated and put into shape. Both these items are big, with possibilities for the future, for they really mean sinews of war to enable the capable and respectable physicians to fight against * Advice-at any-price ’ doctors and medical quacks. Another important measure carried at the congress was the affiliation of the New Zealand Medical Association with the British Medical Association. This measure was not carried without a struggle, for some of the members believed that such an affiliation would mean the complete merging of the New Zealand Association into its larger brother. However, it seems quite likely that the New Zealand Association will be quite able to take whatever advantages such a union may give, and still retain that independence of action which is absolutely necessary to enable them to work freely

under the different conditions that exist at this end of the world.

In view of the important questions set for discussion, the absence of the Auckland delegates was much regretted. Dr. Jennings, of Christchurch, who has long taken an active and important part in the New Zealand Medical Association, was President of the Congress, and Dr. Murray-Aynesly, also of Christchurch, was secretary.
