NAPIER.

Dear Bee, September 9. The Union Debating Society have discontinued their meetings until next season. The various cricket and tennis clubs are haloing meetings, and preparations are being made for opening matches. A pleasant PROGRESSIVE EUCHRE PARTY was given by Captain and Mrs Davidson on Thursday evening. Mesaames Carlile, McLean, Wood, East, Todd, Griffin, Troutbeck, Misses Hall, Balfour, Glendinning, Whyte, Messrs McLean, Barron, Sommerville, Davidson, Sidey, Parker, Captains East and Todd, etc., were present. A richerche supper completed the evening’s success. A most complete function was the BALL given by Mr R. Douglas McLean, chief of the Highland Society’ at Maraekakaho on Friday evening. Two large drags left town crowded, and as many of tne party were in full Highland dress, and the horses were decked with Scotch favours, together with the soul-inspiring bagpipe music, the interest taken in their departure was great. Quite 300 people arrived on the scene, and were treated upon arrival to a sumptuous spread at the accommodation house. Dancing was indulged in at tne large wool shed, which had been tastefully arranged into a ball-room. Messrs Douglas and Archibald McLean were indefatigable in their efforts in welcoming all. Gaelic songs and recitations were contributed, and the orchestra, composed of MissCaulton and Messrs King and Barrett, rendered delightful music. Four progressive euchre parties have taken place this week. Mesdames Newton. Davidson, Wood, and the Hospital nurses have each been entertaining their friends in this delightful fashion. The parents and friends of the High School boys were entertained at THE GYMNASIUM on Wednesday afternoon, when soma excellent physical drill and gymnastic exercises were gone through. The exhibition of Swedish drill by 16 of the boys in neat white costumes was well done, also the Indian club and dumb-bell display, perfect time being kept to the excellent accompaniments of Master Alec Todd, one of the pupils. Messrs Wood, Dakin, and Hill supervised the boys, and after the gymnastic display was over Mrs Wood invited all to the house, where fragrant tea and light refreshments awaited everyone. The sad death of Mr Charles Robjohns, following so shortly after the decease of his father, is a source of general regret, and the greatest sympathy is tended to the mother and widow, who are left desolate. A very large concourse of people, including the Mayor and members of Borough Council and Hospital Board, attended the funeral. HITHER AND THITHER. Mr and Mrs C. Smith have gone to Sydney, also Miss Friberg, of Makatoku. Mr Frederic Villiers, of war fame, is to arrive in town on Tuesday, and gives two lectures. Mr and Mrs Kinross White have returned from Taupo. Miss Glendinning (Mohaka) is visiting Napier. Miss Ross (Christchurch), who has spent a lengthened visit in Napier and Hastings, has gone to Auckland. Miss Whyte, from Scotland, is staying with Mrs J. B. Whyte. STREET GOWNS.
