SAVED HER CALF FROM DROWNING.
Here is a story which illustrates not only the mother love of animals, but the intelligence of an animal that is not supposed to rank very high in respect of intellect. A drove of cattle were being driven across a ford, which a calf was unable to swim, and the little fellow floated down stream. The mother cow saw her offspring being drowned, and instead of making for the opposite shore, as the other animals had done, she swam down the stream below her calf. The current drove him against her body, and she started for the shore, the calf swimming alongside. About midway of the river the swift current swept the calf behind the cow, and again it floundered down stream. Once more the mother went to the rescue. She had to swim aronnd to the other side of the calf, and this done she had to steady herself in the stream until the calf was against her side. Her efforts were successful, however, and cow and calf swam safely to shore.
