PRECAUTIONS AGAINST COLDS.
Now that the season of frost is upon us, mothers should take every precaution that children should not on any account run the risk of catching cold, as a cold, though of no particular danger in itself, may be the forerunner of all sorts of complaints, and one can never tell wheie it may end. Every opportunity should be given youngsters for exercise, and nothing is more exhilarating and beneficial in winter than skating ; but children who skate should be clothed in wool. Woollen underwear and good woollen dresses for girls, and the same with heavy trousers and woollen stockings for the boys. A girl should take a heavy wrap to the skating pond to put on after she has done skating, and a boy his overcoat to prevent check of perspiration. The feet should be encased in perfectly dry woollen stockings, dry shoes, for no boy or girl should put on skates over wet shoes or stockings, as they cause the feet to become chilled to a dangerous degree. Shoes that are laced and fit snugly are the best for this pastime. If a cold is just beginning, give a drop of camphor on a lump of sugar immediately. Put three drops of eucalyptus into half a cup ot water, and give a teaspoonful occasionally through the day or night. If influenza threatens, give a small dose of salicin. Any chemist will supply sixpennorth in right sized powders.
