THE NAPIER YACHT IOLANTHE.

SOME time ago the Napier yachtsmen wrote the Graphic a very kindly and appreciative note on the popularity of the yachting pictures which have appeared in the Graphic from time to time. They also forward a small snap shot Kodak photo of the famous Napier yacht lolanthe, winner of the Challenge Cup in the local yachting regatta. The photo was not a very cleir one, and Mr Ryan, whose jorte in sketching undoubtedly lies in yachting pictures, was therefore commissioned to make a sketch of the little champion of Hawke’s Bay. The lolanthe was built in 1894 by Mr F. Patterson, well known as the builder of several of the fastest yachts in Dunedin, and the season she was launched she won every race with great ease, defeating the second boat sometimes by half an hour in a two - hour run and winning the Napier Sailing Club’s Challenge Cup with the possible 15 points, equal 3 firsts. As the cup had to be won two years in succession or three years at intervals, a great deal of interest was taken in this season’s racing. The handicaps were altered so that the lolanthe had to give the boat that was second the year before 45 minutes start, A boat built on the latest lines was also built by Mr Logan, of Auckland, to compete, called the Elaine, but notwithstanding that she was five feet longer, and had two feet more beam, the lolanthe beat her from Scratch in two heats out of three, and won the cup for good with 13 points.
