BIRTHDAY BALL AT GOVERNMENT HOUSE, WELLINGTON.

OF course the great function for this week has been the Birthday ball, which was held at Government House last Tuesday evening. It was, indeed, a very brilliant scene. There were nearly five hundred guests present, and public opinion pronounces it one of the most successful and enjoyable balls ever given in Government House. The decorations, the work of the Navals, were most tastefully carried out, especially the verandah, which was enclosed and embowered with graceful ferns and plants, brightened with countless Japanese lights and lanterns. Long before 9 p.m. the carriages began their busy evening of bringing guests, and going off for more, and shortly after that hour the ball and ante-rooms seemed alive with gay-robed ladies and bright uniforms, the plain evening clothes of the ordinary gentlemen heightening the general effect by their sombre contrast. Soon after 9 o’clock, when most of the guests were assembled, His Excellency and Lady Glasgow and Ladies Alice and Dorothy Boyle, attended by the Aides in uniform, entered the ball-room and greeted those present. Lady Augusta was, I am glad to say, able to take a passive part in the festivity as an onlooker from her post of vantage on a raised dais at one end of the room. The ball was opened with the lancers. Those who danced in the Governor’s set were Lord Glasgow and Mrs (Dr.) Wallis, Lady Glasgow and the Hon. Mr Seddon, Mrs Seddon and Captain Johnson (H.M.S. Ringarooma), Mrs C. Johnston and Sir Patrick Buckley, Lady Buckley and Mr W. P. Reeves, Mrs (Dr.) Grace and Mr R. Pharazyn, Mrs Williams and Dr. Grace, Mrs R. Pharazyn and Mr C. Johnston. At supper the Premier made a speech, in which he referred to the day as being the birthday of Lord Glasgow’s eldest son, Lord Kelburn, and in proposing his health, invited all present to join him in wishing Lord Kelburn ‘ many happy returns.’ The supper was all that one could desire, there being no overcrowding; in fact, everything was done like clock work.
