PUZZLE OR STORY AND ESSAY COMPETITION.

As there is some question amongst the cousins as to the desirability of having puzzle competitions, or story and essay competitions, I am going to put the question to the vote. Cousin Laura suggests that we give prizes to the cousins who answer most puzzles at rhe end of the quarter. She also suggests a doll competition. Cousin Lou proposes that instead of the puzzles, we have prizes forstories and essays. For myself, I think the doll competition far the best idea. The only trouble is that I am afraid the boys would feel themselves excluded, though I don’t see why in these days of men dressmakers and men milliners the boys should not design some pretty doll’s costumes, and get their mothers or sisters to run them up for them. But I think we might have a doll competition one quarter and a carved wood competition the next, both open to girls and boys. Now will all the cousins send me postcards with their votes for one of these three competitions ? Write on a postcard addressed to Cousin Kate, care of the Lady Editor, New Zealand Graphic, Auckland, either :— ‘ I vote for a puzzle competition.’—Cousin or : • I vote for a story and essay competition.’—Cousin or: ‘I vote for a doll and wood-carving competition.— Cousin signing the card as you usually sign your letters to me. Please, dear cousins, all vote, and post your votes as soon as you can after reading this.—Cousin Kate. the voting so far. At present not many postcards have arrived, but 1 will give the names of those who have already kindly voted. For the story and essay competition Cousin Lou (especially essays), Cousin Stella. Cousin Roi, Cousin Lilia (Parnell). Cousin Florrie (Parnell —story). Cousin lima (Patea), Cousin Dot (Blenheim), Cousin Maude (Nelson.) For the Puzzle Competition—Cousin Lavinia, Cousin Bina. Wood-carving—Cousin Stanley. I vote for an essay competition, allowing only certain ages to compete ; say from 10 to 12, 13 to 15, and 15 to 17.— Cousin Elfie.
