NELSON.

Dkab Bkb, Fkbruary 13. A very enjoyable time was spent last Saturday afternoon at ‘THE CLIFFS,’ when Mrs Richmond and Mr and Mrs Sclanders entertained their friends and the numerous visitors who are here for the Synod at a garden party. ’ The Clitts ’is an ideal place for a garden party, and people enjoyed themselves wandering about the extensive grounds and talking to their friends. A great attraction was the Garrison Bantu which discoursed sweet music during the afternoon. Tea and other delicacies were handed round. The small tables looked very appetising with their dainty loads. Mrs Richmond and Mrs Sclanders received their guests on the verandah, the former looking extremely well in lack striped grenadine, pretty bonnet with touch of yellow. Among the guests were Mesdames Mules, Mackay, Levien. Broad, Tomlinson. Percy Adams, R. Kingdon, Pitt. Cachmailte. Grace, L. Adams, and Thornton. The subject under discussion has been Women’s Franchise, that is. sir John Hall brought in a Bill to allow women to vote at parish meetings. However, after a long and animated debate, the second reading of the Bill was lost, nearly all the Bishops and clergy voting against it. while most of the laity were in favour of it. The Gallery was filled by numbers of the fair sex, who watched the proceedings with great interest. A cricket match which has excited a great deal of interest was played in the Park yesterday and to-day between NELSON V. FIJI, the local cricketers being beaten, much to our disappointment, the only one to distinguish himself being Broad, who made 17 and 80 by sterling good cricket. A number of people witnessed the match yesterday. In the evening the visiting team were entertained by his Worship the Mayor and Mrs Trask, and spent a pleasant time. Anumberof the local cricketers wore also present. OUR PEOPLE. Mr and Mrs Burnes leave to-day for Dunedin for a three weeks’ trip. Miss Meddings returns to Christchurch to-day, having had a good time in Nelson. Mrs Wallis, the wife of the new Bishop of Wellington, left Nelson last week for a short trip to the West Coast. She was accompanied by Dr. Wordsworth, the Bishop of Salisbury. They both return again this week.
